What happened to JP Miller’s Solid Rock Church after Mica Miller’s death
With Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife still dominating the streaming charts, questions have arisen over what happened to Solid Rock Church after the death of Mica Miller.
The documentary follows the real-life story of Mica, 30, who was the wife of South Carolina pastor John-Paul Miller, and the circumstances surrounding her death.
She grew up in the church and married her local pastor, John-Paul, in 2017, who was 15 years her senior and led the congregation at Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach.
However, two days after she served ‘JP’ divorce papers, on 27 April, 2024, she was found dead at Lumber River State Park, across the state line in North Carolina, with her death later ruled a suicide.

The case drew national attention when evidence surfaced that she had accused the church pastor of years of coercive control and abuse, with Mica’s friends and family making similar claims in the new Netflix doc.
The pastor has not been charged with any connection to his estranged wife’s death.
However, he is currently awaiting trial after a federal grand jury in South Carolina indicted him in December 2025 on two counts - one count of making false statements to federal investigators and one count of cyberstalking, as per a press release from the US Attorney’s Office.
He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is scheduled for October 2026.
What was Solid Rock Church?
The Solid Rock Church was a Christian church that was founded by John-Paul, who also started pastoring there in 2016.
As per PEOPLE Magazine, he led with the motto, “Love God and Love People,” and created the church with four core values: 'We serve', 'We forgive', 'We respect', and 'We give'.
However, as seen in the documentary, his sermons were controversial, as he once told his congregation: “Ladies, wives, if you don't meet your husband's sexual needs, Satan will put 20 different options before his eyes before the day's over with.”
During another sermon, John-Paul said: “Do not refuse sex to each other, then Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
“When you refuse to meet this need in your marriage, your spouse will leave you emotionally. They’ll put up a hard heart. And a man never wants to be rejected more than once.
“After that rejection, unless there’s forgiveness and you repent for it, his heart gets hard.”
What happened to Solid Rock Church after Mica’s death?
After Mica’s suicide, according to an account by her brother Nate in the documentary, JP announced her cause of death from the church pulpit, before the coroner’s ruling was decided.
He allegedly sent her family a message blaming them and pressed to collect Mica’s journals and her counsellor’s notes.
Shortly after her death, a group of protestors called ‘Justice for Mica’ started gathering around the church during their Sunday service.
As per The Sun News, they would shout things like ‘You can’t hide from the FBI’ and ‘Justice for Mica’.
The outlet reports that John-Paul’s lawyer, Russell B. Long, said at the time: “They show up to hold up signs and scream and speak into bull horns and yell and harass to the point where they basically killed the church. The church has died. The church has closed down.”
This went on for a while, and there was an incident where John-Paul was arrested for allegedly assaulting a protester, according to police records accessed by PEOPLE.
Is Solid Rock Church still open?
In November 2024, the church officially closed its doors, and JP later sold the land on which it was built, reportedly for $2.1 million, as per The Sun News.
The outlet reported in February 2025 that the plan was to demolish the church and build condos on the land.
JP said at the time: “The city of [Myrtle Beach] did not come through for us, they did not protect us, they did not stop the harassment.
“So after 70 years of that chapel being protected from category 5 hurricanes, wars, and redevelopment, it will now be torn down and have condos built in its place, thanks to the city of [Myrtle Beach].”
However, it looks like the demolition is yet to happen.
As explained by those interviewed in the Netflix series, John-Paul reportedly continues to preach to a congregation of 15 to 20 people gathering in locations around Myrtle Beach, with his new wife Suzy Skinner leading worship.

2015: John-Paul and Mica begin an affair
After first crossing paths when Mica was 13 and attending Solid Rock Church, where John-Paul was a pastor, the pair began an affair when she was 20 and he was 15 years her senior at 35, according to the Netflix doc.
Both were already married at this point - John-Paul had five children with his first wife, Alison Williams, and Mica was married to a fellow member of Solid Rock Church.
2017: John-Paul and Mica marry
After both divorcing their respective spouses, the pair wed each other on 7 November, 2017, when Mica was 23 and John-Paul was 38.
2023: Divorce filing after allegations of control and abuse
Mica first filed for divorce from John-Paul after almost exactly six years of marriage, on 8 October, 2023, according to court documents.
This came after the couple's relationship dynamic was described by Mica's family as 'toxic', despite John-Paul maintaining that they had a 'great marriage' and an 'amazing' relationship.
February-March 2024: Divorce filing dismissed and withdrawn
On 13 February, 2024, Mica's divorce was dismissed. And ten days later, John-Paul filed for separation from Mica, which was subsequently dismissed without prejudice on 12 March, 2024.
April 2024: A final filing for separation
Mica filed for separation for the last time on 15 April, 2024, and a hearing for the separation was scheduled for 5 June. However, just two days after John-Paul was served the separation papers on 27 April, Mica was found dead at the age of 30.
The next day, John-Paul returned to the Solid Rock lectern and gave a sermon, announcing Mica’s death and telling the audience that it was self-inflicted, citing her alleged ongoing mental health struggles.
May 2024: Mica's death is ruled a suicide
According to a media release from the sheriff’s department, Mica died by suicide. Her cause of death was determined after a review of surveillance footage and an examination by the North Carolina Medical Examiner, as well as interviews.
It later emerged that Mica called 911 to announce that she was going to take her own life, and asked operators to trace her call so her family would be able to find her body.
Summer 2024: Mica's family make allegations against John-Paul
Her family shared their concerns over her well-being before her death, and alleged that John-Paul was abusive throughout their marriage - claims John-Paul has continuously denied.
November 2024: Solid Rock Church closes
After John-Paul's sermon addressing Mica's death was recorded and posted online, where it went viral, her death gained online notoriety, and it is believed this contributed to Solid Rock Church closing its doors for good.
December 2025: John-Paul is indicted on two charges
In the time period leading up to Mica's death, she reports that the tyres of her car were slashed multiple times, and told officers that she was being followed.
John-Paul denied being involved in this alleged stalking, but in December 2025, the FBI claimed that he had not been telling the truth to officials.
A federal grand jury indicted John-Paul on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to the FBI.
January 2026: John-Paul arraigned in federal court
The case has been continued to October 2026 for a court date.
