Jessica Simpson stuns fans with 'unrecognisable' photo taken six years ago

The old snap was re-shared to her Instagram Stories

Jessica Simpson posted a throwback snap to her Instagram Stories on Thursday (2 November), admitting that she looks 'unrecognisable.'

The singer and actor revealed in her 2020 memoir, Open Book, that she'd struggled with addiction, admitting: “I was killing myself with all the drinking and pills.”

Now, the 43-year-old - who has been sober since 2017 - has re-shared a snap from the midst of her addiction, writing: "6 years ago".

In the pic, Jessica looks nothing like herself as she sits in a darkened room.

The post, which was originally shared to her Instagram feed back in 2021, was captioned: "This person in the early morning of Nov 1, 2017 is an unrecognizable version of myself.

"I had so much self discovery to unlock and explore. I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity."

The Dukes of Hazzard star wrote that she knew she needed to quit drinking because she was 'exhausted.'

"I wanted to feel the pain so I could carry it like a badge of honor," she continued. "I wanted to live as a leader does and break cycles to advance forward- never looking back with regret and remorse over any choice I have made and would make for the rest of my time here within this beautiful world."

She added that she couldn't believe it had already been four years.

"It feels like maybe 2," she wrote.

The singer and actor has been sober since 2017, declaring "I am free."

"There is so much stigma around the word alcoholism or the label of an alcoholic. The real work that needed to be done in my life was to actually accept failure, pain, brokenness, and self sabotage.

"The drinking wasn't the issue. I was. I didn’t love myself. I didn’t respect my own power. Today I do. I have made nice with the fears and I have accepted the parts of my life that are just sad. I own my personal power with soulful courage. I am wildly honest and comfortably open. I am free."

Under the original post, fans shared their love for the 'Take My Breath Away' singer.

One person wrote: "So proud of you. I needed to read this at just this moment."

Another said: "Wildly powerful. Love. Congratulations and thank you for sharing."

And a third commented: "Thank you for courageously sharing your journey. You don’t know how many people you’ve helped."
