Amy Schumer admitted online comments about her ‘moon face’ led to health diagnosis

Amy Schumer admitted she 'wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard'

Comedian and actor Amy Schumer opened up about how troll comments saying she had a 'moon face' actually ended up alerting her to a rare health diagnosis.

The star got candid about her health on the Call Her Daddy podcast earlier this year, where she explained she was suffering from two conditions amid a barrage of nasty comments about her appearance.

The star has been regularly updating fans on her health, having first opened in November 2024 as she addressed troll comments about her 'moon face'. Most recently, the Trainwreck actor revealed an old surfing accident required her to undergo spinal surgery.

"Since my surfing injury back in the day my L5 has been killing me. Today I got a laminectomy! It’s a short recovery and when I’m feeling better I will buy a bra!," Schumer wrote on Instagram over the weekend.

A laminectomy is a surgical procedure which involves removing a portion of the back part of a vertebra in the spine to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and surrounding nerves.

In 2024, Schumer revealed she had been diagnosed with endometriosis, a painful condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in other parts of the body.

At the time, she wrote on Instagram: "Thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face!

"I have endometriosis, an auto-immune disease that every woman should read about."

Sadly, though, the comments didn't end there.

Schumer later confessed on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast that she continued to get comments on her looks, even after she addressed them.

She said: "I think they’re mad that I’m not thinner, I think they’re mad that I’m not prettier, and that I still feel like I have a right to speak."

However, she did admit that all of the comments on her appearance actually led to her getting diagnosed with a second condition, after medics also started weighing in on the comments section.

Speaking to Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper back in January, Schumer said that she tried to ignore the remarks at first, but she soon grew legitimately concerned after comments from doctors started coming in, too.

Schumer recalled: "Doctors were chiming in in the comments, and they were like, ‘No, no… something’s really up. Your face looks so crazy’.

"At first, I was like ‘F**k off’."

But soon, the penny dropped.

The actor had been getting steroid injections to help with the scars from her breast reduction and C-section, and she thought this could be the culprit.

"So I was getting these steroid injections, and so it gave me this thing called Cushing's syndrome - which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard," Schumer revealed.

Cushing's syndrome is a rare hormonal disorder caused by prolonged exposure to high cortisol levels, according to the NHS.

It turns out that taking high doses of steroids can increase your risk of developing the condition.

Schumer said: "I learned I had this condition, and that I had something called moon face, and I’m starring in a movie - and there’s a camera right in my face.

"I was feeling really down on myself before I started filming this movie… I was, like, really having trouble figuring out how I was going to star in a movie while I had this going on."

Luckily, the star says she has since recovered from her bout of Cushing's, as she quipped about the backlash she received over her face helping alert her to the problem.

"Thank God for that," Schumer joked. "Because that's how I realised something was wrong."
