The Bachelor star Sean Lowe and his wife Catherine Giudice Lowe had to make the difficult decision to rehome their dog after it bit one of their sons.

Sean, 39, took to Instagram on Wednesday (19 April) to explain how their family dog Gus, a bullmastiff, had bitten his six-year-old son Samuel on the side of the head.

As a result, Samuel had to be rushed to the E.R to get a staple in his head.

The reality star explained that, not long before the incident, Gus had also 'snapped at' his three-year-old daughter Mia.

"Ya'll know how much I loved that dog. And he was such a great dog. Great with the kids, well-trained, and he was so full of love," Sean told his followers.

"However, he showed a couple instances of resource guarding in the past when he snapped at/bit Mia.

"We did everything in our power to keep it from happening again but one night several weeks ago, Samuel bent down to pet Gus and Gus bit him on the side of the head.

"The result was a trip to the E.R and a staple in the head. So as much as I love that dog, I have to protect my kids first.

"But he's in a great home and we'll get to see him occasionally."

He then added: "Btw, I died a little on the inside."

When followers asked how Samuel was doing after the frightening run-in, Sean assured them that he's 'doing great'.

"Staple removed and he's fully healed. He misses his dog, too. And so do his brother and sister."

Sean and Catherine are also parents to four-year-old Isaiah.

As for Gus, Sean has assured his followers that the pooch is in a 'great' home and doing just fine.

"I miss him like you wouldn't believe, but one of my answered prayers was that he found a great home (in my mind, the best)," Sean wrote on his Instagram Story.

"My dog trainer asked if she could take him as her own personal dog.

"Now he gets to go to work everyday and be around other dogs.

"She texted me the other day and said this pug hates all dogs except for Gus. Must be the close resemblance."

Now that that drama's over, Sean admitted he and Catherine would hesitate before getting a new pup any time soon.

"I'm sure we will but it won't be for a while," he shared.

"I'm a huge dog lover (Catherine would call it a sickness) but it'd feel like I was cheating on Gus if we got one anytime soon."
