Elle Fanning's new drama series The Girl From Plainville has officially launched on Hulu and viewers are already picking their jaws up off the floor after a shocking end to the first episode.

The mini series is a dramatisation of the real case of Michelle Carter, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter back in 2017, after encouraging her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III to take his own life.

Although the case was major news at the time, there are some details to the story that people are only now learning thanks to the new Hulu series - namely that Michelle Carter was an obsessive Glee fan.

Throughout the opening episode, Michelle has fantasies of her and her boyfriend Conrad as Finn and Rachel from Glee, and regularly makes references to the show.

Viewers were horrified when the first episode of The Girl from Plainville concluded with Michelle (Elle Fanning) watching Glee and mimicking the movements of actress Lea Michele as she sings 'To Make You Feel My Love'.

In 2013, Corey Monteith, who played Finn Hudson on Glee, tragically died, which the series addressed in a particularly poignant episode called 'The Quarterback.'

Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry on the popular musical series, had been dating Monteith in real life, making for an incredibly emotional performance from the actress in the tribute episode.

In a particularly harrowing final scene from the first episode of The Girl From Plainville, Michelle Carter copies every single gesture, gasp, and tear as she recites Rachel's monologue.

Viewers were pretty unsettled when they caught the scene, and took to Twitter to discuss what they had just witnessed.

"The glee scene from #TheGirlFromPlainville… I have no words" tweeted one viewer.

"Not this girl watching Glee thinking she Rachel Berry??? Girl??? You told someone to k*ll themselves OVER THE PHONE???????? #TheGirlFromPlainville" wrote a second.

"Not her actually quoting THE QUARTERBACK EPISODE #TheGirlFromPlainville", a third added.

A fourth disturbed viewer commented: "michelle doing the whole monologue and song from glee of rachel after finn died in her mirror, like i know she was obsessed with glee and used a lot of the lines irl and was hoping they’d touch on it but my god… #thegirlfromplainville"

Other viewers were admittedly embarrassed that they were able to pick up on a number of other Glee references throughout the episode.

One tweeted: "Being a previous glee fan I’m cringing watching how much I notice certain details #TheGirlFromPlainville".

Another joked: "The way I catch every single Glee reference. Embarrassing for me. #TheGirlFromPlainville"

Elle Fanning has since spoken out on the jarring scene, explaining that Michelle had been a huge Glee fan.

She told Variety: "I had seen the show, but I watched a lot of it on set. Reading the pilot, in the last scene she’s singing ‘Make You Feel My Love,’ mimicking Lea Michele’s grief.

"Lea’s grief was real in the show; she’s also mourning her real-life boyfriend. I’ve never met her, but I know every mannerism that she does in that scene. I have a legal pad of notes. I wrote down every time she blinked, every time she moved her hand with each word to mimic the emotion. It was a real exercise. I felt really connected to her, because I feel like I’ve seen her grieve. It was very meta."

The first three episodes of The Girl from Plainville are available to watch on Hulu now.
