Viewers are flocking to social media in excitement after seeing the first trailer for the upcoming Barbie movie.

The first trailer for the live-action film adaptation directed by Greta Gerwig was released yesterday (Friday, 16 December) and viewers have talked about little else since.

Catch the trailer below:

Starring Margot Robbie in the titular role and Ryan Gosling as Ken, along with a whole host of legendary actors, fans have been itching for a glimpse into the world of Barbie.

The official synopsis for the film reads: "After being expelled from Barbieland for being a less than perfect-looking doll, Barbie sets off for the human world to find true happiness."

From simply having viewed the trailer, one viewer has branded the upcoming release as already being the 'movie of the year'.

Another fan even said they'd bought a ticket to Avatar: The Way of Water just so they could 'see the Barbie trailer on the big screen' before 'immediately leaving'.

"Lady Bird and Little Women were two of my favourite films of the decade so you can guess that the Barbie trailer has me bouncing right now," a third commented.

A final resolved: "Barbie trailer y'all!! Give me the whole thing PLEASEE."

As well as starring Robbie and Gosling, the likes of Elf lead Will Ferrell, Sex Education's Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Simu Liu are also taking to the screen in the upcoming release.

Prior to the extremely positive fan response to Barbie's first trailer, director Greta Gerwig noted the pressure of taking on such an iconic character as Barbie who holds 'a lot of nostalgic connections'.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, lead actor Robbie echoed similar concerns, also addressing the decision to cast her in the lead role: "People immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is'."

However, Robbie added: "But our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different - the thing you didn’t know you wanted'."

And indeed, after releasing its first trailer, Barbie already has viewers absolutely hooked and gasping for another sneak preview into Barbieland. July 2023 can't come soon enough.
