Thousands of 1899 fans have signed a petition to save the Netflix show after they were shocked to learn it had been cancelled by the streaming site.
The mysterious sci-fi series, which landed on Netflix in November last year, follows the story of an immigrant steamship as she makes her away across the Atlantic from London to New York - all while haunted by whisperings of what happened to another missing ship, the Prometheus.
While it's presumed to have sunk, in season one we find that this was not the case, as the Kerebos discovers the missing Prometheus mid-journey.

The show's official synopsis reads: "1899. A migrant steamship heads west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad.
"But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.”
Since its release towards the end of the year, the series was met with rave reviews from viewers, with some even saying it was ‘one of the best shows’ they’d ever watched.

However, it has now been confirmed that it has been cancelled by Netflix after just one season.
One of 1899's creators, Baran bo Odar, broke the news on Instagram, writing: "With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.
He added: "That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget."
Unhappy with this fate, many fans have signed a petition titled ‘Renew 1899 on Netflix’, in the hope that it will drum up enough support for the streamer to see the error in its ways.

“1899 was clearly created with multiple seasons in mind,” the Change.org petition reads.
“After the first season, there are a lot of unanswered questions and a big cliffhanger at the end of the last episode.
“We want a renewal of the show and a proper end to the story.”

At the time of writing, it has already had more than 24,000 signatures.
Of course, successful petitions don’t always result in action – but it can happen, as we learnt with the likes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and period drama Sanditon, both of which came back to life after uproar from passionate fans.
