Netflix has a pretty good reputation for giving us shows that keep us on the edge of our seats, and its latest offering is no exception.

Released on 17 November, 1899 is a historical thriller that's now being praised by viewers as the 'best series' on the streaming platform 'hands down'.

The show follows an immigrant steamship, the Kerberos, as she makes her away across the Atlantic from London to New York, all while haunted by whisperings of what happened to another missing ship, the Prometheus.

While it's presumed to have sank, it quickly becomes apparent that this was not the case when the Kerebos discovers the missing Prometheus mid-journey.

It's a ghost ship in every sense of the word, leaving passengers scratching their heads about what exactly happened to its passengers and crew on the open sea.

A mystery soon unfolds when a lost ship is discovered.

The mystery only deepens from this point on, and it truly is a thrilling portrait of not only life at the time, divided across the classes, but how people will turn on each other when faced with danger in the open sea.

The show's official synopsis reads: "1899. A migrant steamship heads west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad.

"But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare."

A journey to a new life soon turns into a nightmare for the passengers.

Now, fans have been taking to social media to praise the thriller, which stars some familiar faces including Maciej Musiał of The Witcher.

Taking to the Facebook group Netflix Bangers, one fan wrote: "1899 is the best series on Netflix hand down, and being the first multi cultural series on NETFLIX it's very brilliant.

"It very much more than I expected, highly recommend. I rate 1899 10/10."

A second similarly praised on Twitter: "1899 is truly one of the best shows I've ever watched, it was just incredible(as expected from bo and jantje) literally the cast, the storytelling, the plot, the cinematography, the soundtracks, everything was just PERFECTION [sic]."

"1899 might be the best show Netflix has produced. Incredible," wrote a third, while a fourth praised: "Holy sh*t 1899 is f**king incredible. Just binged the whole season and I need s2 now."

"Just finished1899 on Netflix," shared a fifth. "I haven't binged watched something so fast in ages. It's an utter mind f**k. Incredible, go watch it."

1899 is available to stream now.
