McDonald's Employee Reveals Why The Spoons Are Hollow

Mind. Blown.

We've always had questions about McFlurry spoons.

Firstly, why are they hollow? And secondly, why-oh-why can you not suck ice cream out of them?

Luckily, a McDonald's employee has given us the answers we need in a TikTok video that's since gone viral, with over 3 million views.

It seems other people have been searching for the truth about the oddly shaped spoons, too.

Turns out, the real use of the spoon is a nifty mixing utensil to properly combine the contents of your McFlurry.

The little opening at the top of the spoon allows it to be attached to one of Maccy D's ice cream dispensing machines. Then, hey presto, it swirls the velvety-smooth ice cream and toppings together.

McDonald's fans have long wondered why the McFlurry spoons are hollow (

Who's responsible for this total revelation? We hear your ask.

Well, the 13 second clip was shared by a Macca's worker and TikTok user with the handle @marzpire.

The 13 second clip on to the video sharing app is captioned: "If u didnt know, now u do #mcflurry #mcdonalds #icecream #mcdonaldssecrets #howto #canada."

We then see @marzpire prepping a McFlurry topped with plenty of chocolate. Mmm.

The next caption reads: "Have you ever wondered why you can't drink out of a McFlurry spoon???"

Turns out, the opening at the top of the straw means that it can be used as a mixing utensil (

Yes. Yes, we have. @marzpire, you see straight through us.

Then, with the spoon clipped to the machine and swirling that ice cream around, everything becomes clearer.

Finally, the big reveal: "What the spoon is really for... To MIX!!"

People's minds have been blown. Users commented that they "used to think it was a broken straw" and that "every single person who has had a McFlurry for the first time has tried to drink it out of the spoon".

At least we weren't the only ones, eh?

Due to lockdown restrictions, we won't be enjoying a McFlurry any time soon (

Unfortunately, lockdown means we won't be enjoying a McFlurry any time soon.

Talking about the prospect of reopening the global chain, Paul Pomroy, McDonald's CEO for the UK and Ireland, said: "Restarting our business is not an easy task even when reopening in a limited capacity.

"We have set ourselves some key criteria for reopening, all of which take time - first and foremost ensuring the well-being of our people and creating the right environment for them to return to work; secondly ensuring we have enough supply of fresh produce; and finally working in-step with government guidelines to ensure the safety of our customers."

We'll have to wait patiently for our next Maccies fix.

Of course, in the grand scheme of things, the McFlurry spoon conundrum is a tiny thing. But hey, in these bizarre times, we'll take even the smallest mystery being solved.
