There has now been a major update surrounding the woman who was able to conceive a 'healthy' baby in prison using a bizarre method without ever meeting her fellow inmate.
Daisy Link and Joan Depaz managed to have a baby together while both serving sentences for separate crimes at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, Florida, US.
Link was charged with second-degree murder after she allegedly killed her husband, Pedro Jimenez, in 2022, Law&Crime reported, and was awaiting her murder trial to begin in December 2023, while Depaz was being held on a separate murder charge.
The pair, who had only communicated through an air conditioning vent connecting their upstairs and downstairs cells, developed a bond before Link confided her desire to become a mother.
Daisy Link managed to get pregnant and have a healthy little girl while in prison (Miami-Dade Corrections) Realising that small items could be passed through the vent, they devised a plan to make her dream a reality.
Depaz assisted by transferring a glove containing his semen through the vent, reportedly doing so multiple times a day over the course of a month.
Link then used a medical applicator to inseminate herself, and after several attempts, she became pregnant in 2024 with the infant now in the care of relatives.
And now the latest update in the case sees Link convicted of the second-degree murder of Jimenez - the father of her older two children - back in June 2022, per Local10.
Jimenez, who had been with Link for nine years, died after he was shot in the leg and left to bleed out as she was seen on a security camera walking away while, according to footage obtained by Local10, mocking that she struck a 'major artery'.
Joan Depaz said he sent over his semen through a vent at least five times a day (Miami-Dade Corrections) Link testified that she fired the gun only as a warning, intending to scare Jimenez away rather than harm him.
"That’s the father of my kids," she said. "It’s not like I didn’t love him - I did."
Prosecutor Alex Bergida described the relationship between Link and Jimenez as 'toxic,' noting that domestic violence occurred on both sides.
Link’s defence portrayed Jimenez as a violent drug addict, and argued he had a history of abusing her and had attacked her in a drunken rage just days before he died.
Defence attorney Ayuban Thomas told the court: "He wasn’t a good guy. He was a cokehead, wife-beating lunatic."
The defence centred on Link’s claim of self-defence, asserting that she acted out of fear after Jimenez allegedly threatened to break into her home and take their children.
Link’s 11-year-old son testified virtually, saying he witnessed his father assaulting Link and pistol-whipping her.
"He [Jimenez] pointed the gun at my mom and fired, but he missed," the boy testified, according to CBS News Miami.
"He was hitting her with the bottom of the gun," he added.
Pedro Jimenez was fatally shot outside a home in Homestead, Florida, on June 2022 (CBS News) After the verdict, juror Kenan Bowie explained the panel’s reasoning for finding Link guilty.
"If he’s running away and she shot him in the back, that doesn’t seem like self-defence," Bowie told reporters outside the courtroom.
"There was a lot that she lied about - a lot from the second she called 911," he said. "I just really looked at the facts of what happened that day. And the only conclusion we could reach was guilty."
Following the verdict, Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle commended the prosecution team.
"Today, Daisy Link has been found guilty of the second-degree murder of her boyfriend, Pedro Jimenez," Fernandez Rundle said. "We thank the jury for their careful review of all the evidence and applaud our prosecutors for effectively presenting the facts that led to this just verdict."
A pre-sentencing hearing is set for November 21.
