Today, the Princess Royal is celebrating her milestone 75th birthday - and Buckingham Palace have released a new official portrait to mark the occasion.

Sharing it to the royal social media accounts yesterday evening (14th August), they outlined that the snap was taken last month at Gatcombe Park, Anne's private residence, by photographer John Swannell.

And in the photo itself, Anne looks radiant in a blue and white collared dress, complete with a pop of lipstick and some elegant black and silver earrings.

Royal fans have wished her a happy birthday in the replies, with one writing: "Beautiful picture of a person who is beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. Thank you for your service. And a very happy birthday!"

Another Twitter user added: "Happiest birthday to TPR! A woman well deserving of all the birthday love she is receiving."

And a third penned: "This is one of the prettiest pictures I've seen of her lately. That colour is wonderful on her! She's a treasure. Happy Birthday to Princess Anne."

The gorgeous portrait and birthday celebrations have prompted social media users to begin sharing the same wish again - even though sadly, it likely won't ever come true.

Royal family fans want Princess Anne, who has earned the nickname of the 'hardest working royal,' to become Queen.

This is no surprise as the Princess Royal is an immensely popular member of the British monarchy and she is well known for her dedication to the cause.

She kicked off her birthday festivities off last month and instead of opting for a swanky and elaborate party, she instead hosted more than 100 of her favourite charities at Buckingham Palace.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's daughter spent more than two hours at the bash, shaking hands with as many of the 200-plus guests as she could and thanking them for their work.

Despite her hard work and fans hopes, it's almost impossible that Anne could ever become Queen as she is currently 18th in line for the throne.

When she was born she was third in line to the throne, but now sadly, there are a slew of people ahead of her in the ranking, including Prince William and Prince Harry, followed by their children.

The Duke of York and Princess Beatrice and her children Sienna Mapelli Mozzi and Athena Mapelli Mozzi also all come before Anne in the line of succession.

Fans wrote in the comments of the portrait: "Should have been our next queen. Happy birthday, Princess Anne" and "She should have got the crown."

Others added: "The best Queen we never had," and "The woman who should have been Queen."

While more royal family fans agreed: "She’s such an asset to the Royal Family," and "She should have been our Queen."

However, others simply continued to shower the royal with love, with another dan writing: "I love all the recognition given by His Majesty to mark his sister’s milestone birthday!

"She has shown such selfless service to The Crown, it is well deserved. Happy birthday to the Princess Royal!"

Another added: "Happy birthday such an incredibly inspiring lady!"
