Kamala Harris sparks backlash over ’67’ joke that hasn’t gone down well with Gen Z

Should politicians be trying to get 'down with the kids'? It looks like the answer is a firm no...

Kamala Harris' Gen Z-aimed joke hasn't quite landed the way she'd hoped.

On Wednesday (4 February) the 61-year-old former Democratic Vice President of the United States teased her political comeback on social media as she revived her @KamalaHQ account on X.

The account in question was used during her 2024 presidential campaign against Donald Trump, however until this week it had been left unused for 15 months.

As we say though, yesterday, Harris posted a short teaser clip, which showed a login page with the account name reading @KamalaHQ as a series of passwords were typed into the box below.

Some of the 'incorrect' passwords include 'waytooonline', 'thebabysitterisweird', 'project2025wasreal', before the 'correct' password, 'headquarters', was typed in and accepted.

The video cuts to an all-black screen with white caps-lock lettering reading: "TOMORROW."

Fans of Harris immediately rushed to social media to question what the cryptic post could mean, with some suggesting she's planning White House run in 2028.

Yesterday (5 February), all was revealed though as Harris announced that she was teaming up with liberal advocacy group People For the American Way to rebrand the KamalaHQ accounts as 'Headquarters' - a media hub aimed at Gen Z voters.

In her launch video, the politician said that Headquarters is 'where you can go online to get the latest of what’s going on, and also to meet and revisit with some of our great and courageous leaders — be they elected leaders, community leaders, civic leaders, faith leaders, young leaders. I’m really excited about it. Stay engaged, and I’ll see you out there'.

And according to People For the American Way, as per Variety, the initiative is 'an effort to mobilize pro-justice, pro-fairness, pro-democracy young people against far-right extremism'.

But there was one tiny detail that seriously got people distracted - the X username was launched as '@Headquarters67_,' before swiftly being changed to @Headquarters68_' for some reason.

The bio of the account reads: "Elon [Musk] wouldn’t give us @headquarters."

Despite the quick switch up from 67 to 68, people still noticed the initial number and think it was an attempt at Gen Z and Gen Alpha's viral '6-7' trend, which to be honest, don't ask us to explain, we don't get it either.

Kids around the country are essentially shouting 'six seven' and doing a hand gesture of two upturned palms rising and falling, like weighing scales, either randomly, or whenever they hear the number.

It doesn't actually mean anything - it's just viral internet brain rot.

And it looks like the youngsters aren't enjoying Kamala joining in on the joke, mainly because they think it doesn't really have a place in the world of politics.

One X user penned: "Wait, she actually put “67” in the handle to try to appeal to the youths? This is why she’s the GOAT. No other politician comes close to this level of cringe."

While a second sarcastically joked: "omg guys it’s called headquarters 67, it's called 67, I can’t afford a home or groceries and my taxes fund genocide, but guys they did the funny number."

And a third asked: "The 6 7 is a fading trend among kids, by putting it in the handle they don’t seem to plan on this Headquarters sticking around. What sort of fees is Kamala Harris collecting for this gig?"

Meanwhile, others chimed in with: "Putting 67 in the username girl pls be serious for one second" and "Who is that Gen-z staffer who put the 67 at the end of this, come to the front right now!"

Someone else asked: "Head quarters 67? really?" while another brutally wrote: "An incredible misreading of the room,"

Others added: "Who's asking for this?" and "clock it but let's remove the 67 please".

Tyla has contacted a rep for Harris for comment.
