Californian governor makes bold claim about world leaders' true feelings on Trump

Despite Trump claiming how well loved he is in Europe, Gov. Gavin Newsom insists that isn't the case

Donald Trump's reputation around the world isn't as good as he thinks it is, according to one Governor.

Governor Gavin Newsom was speaking at a Politico event called 'The California Agenda: Sacramento Summit' when he made a bold claim about how many of the world's leaders feel about Trump.

Many moments have been caught on camera of Trump interacting with European leaders, including recently showering the Italian PM Giorgia Meloni with praise.

He told her that she looked great, while later she joked about his love of speaking to the press.

However, it seems like the feeling isn't mutual for many of the world's powers according to California Governor Newsom.

The Governor has been engaged in a war of words with Trump for many weeks, often mocking his style of posting on social media.

"I've had the privilege of meeting a lot of foreign leaders... they're laughing behind his back."

"That did not happen - I'm making this clear - do not conflate what I just said with the meeting I had with the Denmark delegation," he stressed.

The host replied: "It wasn't them? Other foreign leaders are laughing?"

Newsom answered: "I've heard dozens and dozens. Ambassadors, they're laughing behind his back, he's been played everywhere, it's an embarrassment."

It comes after Trump shared a strange nickname he thinks he's earned while speaking at the White House’s Oval Office on Monday, August 28.

“I think our nation is the most respected nation in the world, by far,” he claimed, "Where they respect your president to a level that they jokingly call me the ‘President of Europe.’"

“They call me the President of Europe which is an honour. I like Europe and I like those people… they’re great leaders.” Awkward.

If Newsom is to be believed, this isn't the first time world leaders have laughed at the President.

During his first term in 2018, Trump was speaking at the U.N. General Assembly.

He claimed the American economy is 'booming like never before', and said his administration achieved more in under two years than almost any other administration.

His words drew laughter from the heads of state and delegates in the audience.

A surprised Trump replied saying: “I didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s OK.”

Trump says the U.S. is a 'stronger, safer and richer country' than when he took office in January 2017.

Commenters on Reddit rushed to react to Newsom's comments.

"Oh boy. Can't wait to see how Trump lashes out over this one," said one, excitedly.

"Newsom is doing rage bait and it’s all targeted at one person," joked another.

"It's hilarious and I love it! I'm in Europe and not one person has said a nice thing about him," insisted one onlooker, while one from further afield added: "One Australian PM (Turnbull) has pretty openly called him an idiot so it tracks."

Someone else weighed in: "Actually 3 Australian Prime Ministers including our current one, have criticized him. The two former PMs were open about it."

Gov. Newsom is showing no sign of stopping his war of words any time soon.
