Eagle-eyed viewers reckon they spotted the moment Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni was caught doing an 'embarrassing' gesture during a meeting with Donald Trump and other world leaders - but people are divided over what really happened.

During the Ukraine peace talks held in Washington, United States, on Monday (18 August), Italy's leader was joined by several other European politicians, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

There have been a lot of talking points from the big meeting, including the fact that Trump name-dropped his own assassination attempt and was overheard on a hot mic giving President Macron the lowdown on Putin.

In another viral moment, one particular clip from the event floating around on social media sees Chancellor Merz telling Trump about the importance of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

It's something which appears to provoke Meloni to roll her eyes, an action she's been caught doing in the past.

Many were convinced that Meloni did in fact roll her eyes at Trump with one Twitter user writing: "WOW! The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, just ROLLED her eyes after chuckling at Trump’s joke. Did anyone saw [sic] that?"

"She did…" agreed a second while a third responded: "Yeah, the entire world saw it..."

A fourth theorised: "She spotted the cameras and gave us that eye roll like, do I really have to deal with this nonsense? LOL I love that woman."

"Trump thinks the world is his stage. Reality thinks he’s a clown. Italy’s PM just rolled her eyes for all of us. Welcome to the global embarrassment tour," hit out another.

Others, however, weren't so convinced or impressed with such theories.

One person pointed out: "You can interpret it as such - or that it is embarrassing for her to have to do that as a prime minister of a European country. Depends on how you want to see it."

A second explained: "If you watch Georgia's press moments she, almost always rolls her eyes. It seems to be her thing."

"Grasping at straws, you are," slammed a third while a fourth echoed: "Well, you guys have nothing do you? A playful eye roll is all you’ve got?"

Another declared: "Not true. She rolled them when the German Chancellor was speaking."

And a final Twitter user jabbed: "She obviously thinks he's cute and fun and the eyeroll was playful. Get a life."

Monday's meeting came after Trump's high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (15 August) in Anchorage, Alaska.

While the 79-year-old Republican claimed that he and Putin had an 'extremely productive meeting,' he was ultimately unable to get Putin to agree to a ceasefire.
