Donald Trump's 'brutal' comment about Zohran Mamdani's appearance has not gone down well

It's not the first time Mamdani has butted heads with Donald Trump

People have branded Donald Trump 'insane' after he took a savage swipe at the freshly elected New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

It was announced yesterday (5 November) that Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, is set to become the next mayor of the Big Apple.

And his election has already made history for a whole slew of reasons, as Mamdani will not only be the first Millennial to take on the role, but also the city’s most liberal mayor in generations, the first Muslim mayor, as well as the first of South Asian heritage, and the first born in Africa.

A lot of New Yorkers are delighted by the news, considering Mamdani bagged more than 50 percent of the vote, beating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

However, one person who's made their thoughts abundantly clear is the US president, Donald Trump, who's butted heads with Mamdani on more than one occasion.

On Monday (3 November), Trump compared himself to the politician in a bizarre way during an appearance on CBS’s 60 Minutes.

When the interviewer described Mamdani as a democratic socialist, Trump interrupted: "Communist. Not socialist, communist. He’s far worse than a socialist."

Then, the journalist quizzed: "Some people have compared him to a left-wing version of you: charismatic, breaking the old rules. What do you think about that?"

And Trump's response was less than complimentary.

The US president replied: "Well, I think I'm a much better-looking person than him. Right?"

As expected, the internet has rushed to react to the comment, with one person writing on Twitter: "Trump just claimed he’s better looking than Mamdani. Yes he’s insane".

While a second added: "Trump just said he’s “better looking than Zohran Mamdani.” You can’t make this up. The man’s turning insecurity into performance art at this point."

The Republican leader, 79, has previously threatened to arrest Mamdani and hinted he could even withhold funding from the city if he were to be elected.

Trump previously ranted on Truth Social: "He is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City. Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfil all of his FAKE Communist promises.

"He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him? This ideology has failed, always, for thousands of years. It will fail again, and that’s guaranteed!"

Hitting back in his victory speech, Mamdani said: "If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him."

He added: "This is not only how we stop Trump. It's how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: 'Turn the volume up'."
