Donald Trump has shared a private text message he received from the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, and people are in shock at one specific comment about Europe.

The American President posted a screenshot of the lengthy and gushing message on his own social media platform, Truth Social, earlier today (24 June).

According to The Financial Times, despite how unbelievable it may seem, a NATO official confirmed the message’s authenticity.

Rutte is seen congratulating Trump, calling him ‘extraordinary’ and going on to say that he will ‘achieve something NO American president in decades could get done’.

The text message comes as allied leaders gathered in the Netherlands for a historic summit as they try to agree on a new defence spending pledge.

32 member countries, including the UK, are reportedly expected to agree on a goal of spending 5% of their gross domestic product on their security.

Now, the text in question reads: “Mr President, dear Donald. Congratulations and thank you for your decisive action in Iran, that was truly extraordinary, and something no one else dared to do. It makes us all safer.

“You are flying into another big success in The Hague this evening. It was not easy but we’ve got them all signed onto 5 percent!”

Rutte is, of course, referring to the conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran - something the US has since gotten involved with when the Trump administration launched strikes on three of Iran's nuclear sites over the weekend.

This resulted in Iran retaliating by striking US air bases in Qatar and Iraq.

He continued: “Donald, you have driven us to a really, really important moment for America and Europe, and the world. You will achieve something NO American president in decades could get done.”

However, the part that’s left people worried, is where Rutte says: “Europe is going to pay in a BIG way, as they should, and it will be your win”.

He then simply signs off the message with: “Safe travels and see you at His Majesty’s dinner!”

Social media has been quick to react to the alarming message, and people are not happy.

One Twitter user penned: Just when you thought your jaw couldn't drop any further... Donald Trump releases a private message sent by NATO Sec General Mark Rutte - with a very big claim, and written, it would seem, in the most Trumpian language. What a world.”

Another quipped: "Europe is going to pay in a BIG WAY, as they should and it will be your win" - Mark Rutte, the secretary general of NATO, to Trump. What kind of betrayal is this?

They questioned: “What does “as they should” even mean? Does Rutte no longer consider himself European?”

Others quipped: “I doubt Rutte wanted the world to see that” and “Mark Rutte knows how to play the Trump game”.

Meanwhile, someone else raged: “Reading Mark Rutte’s appalling a**-licking note to Trump a reminder of the *absolute failure* in leadership we see all over Europe.”
