Patrick Clancy revealed what he asked his ex-wife Lindsay Clancy after she killed their three children

Patrick Clancy has given his first in-depth interview since his ex-wife Lindsay Clancy’s highly publicised trial ended in a mistrial.

The 36-year-old appeared alongside his new wife, Dr Rachel Danis, in an interview with 60 Minutes, which aired on Sunday (20 September), where he candidly discussed his grief, details of the tragedy, and the heartbreaking question he asked Lindsay after she killed their three children.

Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan died on 24 January, 2023.

While it was undisputed whether she killed them, the Massachusetts trial saw proceedings that lasted nearly six weeks, as Clancy’s defence argued that she could not be held criminally responsible for the children’s deaths because she was allegedly suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time. However, prosecutors argued that she acted ‘intentionally’ and ‘rationally’.

On 4 September, the trial ended in a mistrial when the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on whether Lindsay was guilty of murder.

Now, Patrick has shared the one question he asked his wife following the tragedy, which saw him return home from running errands to discover his three children were dead, while his then-wife had attempted to take her own life.

He said: “I asked her if she remembered it. She said it was like a dream and she remembered much in the way you would remember a dream after waking up.”

The host, CBS News correspondent Ross Douthat, also asked Patrick the impossible question of whether he felt like he had failed.

He replied: “I think I did the best I could with what I had at the time, and I live with the outcome. I live with it every day.”

When asked whether Lindsay had ever asked for his forgiveness, Patrick said: “No, but I gave it to her.”

He added: “I saw headlines that said, you know, 'Killer Mom', and 'Baby Murderer', 'Monster'. And none of them were accurate.

“I believe that it was her mental illness that caused that. So I shared those words. And I think when it comes to forgiveness, I also felt that if I didn't get there, I would be eaten up inside forever.”

Patrick also talked about the heartbreaking moment he thought that his youngest son, Callan, might have survived.

He recalled: “I really thought there was a chance that Callan would live. And I remember just thinking, ‘Just gimme one. Just gimme one kid, and I would raise him as best I could, and I would give him the best life I possibly could.’

“I’d tell him about his brother and sister. And I was holding out hope for that. And then when I got to the hospital, I saw the doctor. I saw the look on her face, and - and I knew that it - it wasn’t gonna be a good prognosis.”

Recalling the devastating moment, Patrick explained: “I said, ‘I’m so sorry.’ And I got to - I got to hold him. I got to lay down next to him. And he died in my arms.”
