Footballer has savage four-word response to Donald Trump turning up to trophy ceremony

A British footballer has gone viral for his response to the US President making an appearance at his team's Club World Cup final game.

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer, 23, took on Paris Saint-Germain last night (13 Jul) for the nail-biting tournament.

For those in need of a reminder, the Club World Cup previously took place on an annual basis, and only saw seven teams around the world permitted to get involved. In 2023, however, FIFA ruled that it would become a quadrennial competition, meaning it will only take place every four years going forward, and will now involve 32 teams.

The new knockout-style tournament saw France's PSG and England's Chelsea go head-to-head during last night's final, where the Brits beat the French 3-0.

Two winning goals were scored by Manchester-born athlete Cole Palmer, who famously scored England's only goal during last year's Euros final against Spain.

Following the victory, he and his Chelsea teammates were presented with a colossal trophy from FIFA president Gianni Infantino, with captain Reece James raising the accolade high.

Bizarrely, however, during the festivities, Donald Trump suddenly made an appearance on the pitch, joining Infantino to shake the winning team's hands.

Reacting to the Republican's attendance, Palmer could be seen on live television expressing his shock with a pretty iconic statement.

Viewers watching from home saw the sportsman seemingly yelling out, 'Why is Trump here?!', with a baffled look plastered across his face.

Later, Palmer told press he'd been told that 79-year-old Trump would be in attendance for the match, but never expected him to make his way onto the field.

"I knew he was going to be here but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy," the footballer confessed to BBC Sport. "I was a bit confused, yes."

The clip of Palmer has since spread online, apparently leaving social media users in stitches.

"I LOVE COLE PALMER. SAYING WHY IS TRUMP HERE," one fan wrote on X, as another added: "F**king love palmer."

"I mean to be fair, why is he there?" a third laughed. "He’s not a part of the team. He can take photos after."

"I’m crying. He cracks me up," another continued of Palmer.

By the sounds of things, he wasn't the only footballer perplexed by the President's attendance, with Chelsea centre-mid Levi Colwill, 22, telling Sky Sports: "They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage. I thought that he was going to exit the stage but he wanted to stay."

The British team's front-man James, 25, added: "To be honest it was quite loud. I couldn't hear too much.

"He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment."
