An autopsy technician has explained what happens if someone dies with a tampon in.

In some unexpected female deaths, it's likely that they may have a tampon in at the time of passing.

For many of us, the thought of having a tampon in forever is one of the worst possibilities.

Using them for a week at a time is more than enough.

But an autopsy technician has revealed what exactly happens, and it turns out, they have our best interests at heart even after death.

He said: "As an autopsy tech, it's part of my job. I'll remove that if you have one in.

"You're welcome, I don't want you to like spend eternity with one of those in there."

Referring to the risk of developing toxic shock syndrome (TSS) - which can be caused by leaving a tampon in for too long - the autopsy technician added: "Don't you get like sick or something if one stays in for too long? We don't want that to happen.

"Not on my watch, I got you. I'll remove everything."

He then went onto explain the job of an autopsy tech, who generally prepare bodies for examination after death.

The expert said: "Everything gets removed, all your pieces will get put in a bag and then the bag will be put in your belly.

"So you get to keep everything, except from that tampon I'll throw that away."

People in the comments were quick to make light of the slightly gruesome job.

One said: "Autopsy technician keeping us safe from toxic shock syndrome even in the afterlife, much thanks."

Another wrote: "As a ghost, I’d be so pissed to spend eternity with a tampon in."

While a third noted: "And they say that chivalry is dead."

According to the NHS, toxic shock syndrome 'is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by an infection'.

While it is a rare condition, it can be fatal if not treated urgently.

As well as prolonged tampon use, the condition can also be triggered by menstrual cups, a contraceptive diaphragm or a cap.

Vaginal births and C-sections can also spark TSS - as can a cut, wound, boil or burn that has become infected.

The most common symptoms of the condition are the likes of a high temperature, flu-like symptoms, a fever or shivers, dizziness and confusion vomiting and diarrhoea.

But it's good to know that an autopsy tech has our back even when we don't know about it.
