A couple who have been married 70 years say the secret to their long marriage is "having a laugh" together.

Davie and Margaret Hunter met when they worked in a Schweppes fizzy drink factory 71 years ago, and have been inseparable ever since. Davie worked with lorries while Margaret was an operator.

Dad-of-two Davie, 93, said that he used to miss his bus after work because he would spend so much time chatting to Margaret, 89.

Davie said: "Her granny used to say, 'that poor boy' because I was always missing the bus and having to cycle all the way home just so I could stay and talk to Margaret."

After they became an item not long afterwards, the pair married in 1951, with their wedding reception - held at Margaret's mum's house - costing just £25.

They then lived a happy life in Cumbernauld, South Lanarkshire, where they remained right up until moving into Rosepark Care Home, Uddingston, South Lanarkshire, in January.

All these years later, the couple still have as much to say to each other as they did then. They attribute their relationship's longevity to 'liking each other' and 'having a laugh'.

Margaret said: "We still love each other as much as the day we met. The past 70 years have been absolute bliss with Davie - he is my best friend, and I can't wait to enjoy more times like these together at Rosepark."

To celebrate their 70 year anniversary, the care home Margaret and Davie both live in made a huge fuss of them, and (to give an idea how treasured the pair are within the community) local businesses even donated balloons, banners, and a three-tier cake.

The couple managed to have a romantic time, too, as care home staff gathered pictures of the couple to create a backdrop for a three-course meal they were treated to, prepared especially by the home's own chefs.

"It was so kind for the staff and the local shops to think of us and make our day by showering us with such generous gifts and surprises - we can't thank everyone enough," Margaret added.

Activity co-ordinator, Annette Frew said: "Davie and Margaret are a really wonderful couple. They are always having fun together and are the perfect example of soulmates.

"Both are full of character and never cease to get us all laughing away."
