The Simpsons has been known to ‘predict’ a number of big world events – something that’s become a bit of a running joke among fans.

Over the years, the hit cartoon seems to have foreshadowed everything from autocorrect and smartwatches to Super Bowl wins and Disney buying 20th Century Fox.

Then, of course, there’s the Donald Trump presidency, which came in season 11’s episode ‘Bart to the Future’.

The episode depicts Lisa as the latest US president, wearing a sharp purple suit as she tells her cabinet that they’ve ‘inherited quite the budget crunch from President Trump’.

It was initially a reference to his attempt to run as a candidate for the Reform Party, but became eerily relevant when Trump ended up landing the presidential role in 2016 as part of the Republican party.

Many have since taken the interesting link as a sign that the show also predicted Kamala Harris' potential presidency, sharing side-by-side photos of her in a similar purple suit.

“It was foretold in the prophecies,” one fan tweeted.

Another agreed: “It's damn true. These cartoons were ahead of time.”

However, others have pointed out one major flaw in the theory, suggesting that, if anything, the episode predicts Harris won’t win this time round.

“But the Simpson prophesy says she's President AFTER Trump,” one explained. “President Lisa Said ‘We inherited a crunch of debt from President Trump’.”

Someone else asked: “So Kamala is going to win in 2028? After the next Trump presidency?”

A third wrote: “Kamala is inheriting her budget crunch from Biden and herself though.”

A fourth added: “Wouldn't this mean that the next president AFTER Trump would be a woman?”

As for that purple pantsuit, Simpsons writer Mike Scully recently told The Hollywood Reporter that it had been an entirely ‘random’ decision.

“The pantsuit may have been a nod to Hillary Clinton at the time, or we were just going for a power look,” he told the outlet, adding of the colour purple: “That seemed to have been a random choice. It may have been done by the animators.”

As for the pearls, Scully said: “Lisa always wears them.”

Another writer, Al Jean, also spoke out about the supposed prediction, posting a comparison post of Lisa and Harris on Twitter.

“@TheSimpsons ‘prediction’ I’m proud to be a part of,” he wrote.
