A dark TV series with a 'messed up' female lead is being hailed as the 'greatest rebound in the history of television'.

The thriller in question, which spans eight seasons in total, first hit our screens back in 2011 and went on to become many viewers' favourite TV show of all time given its stellar cast, the 'outstanding' production value and its seriously 'intense' finale episode which aired in 2020.

Starring Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Morena Baccarin, the 96-episode-strong series used to be available to watch on Netflix but it's since moved to another streaming platform altogether - so there's no need to fret!

Now, the series follows CIA operative Carrie Mathison (Danes) who is on the lookout for an American prisoner who may have joined forces with Al-Qaeda.

Released from hostage after eight years, Marine Nicholas Brody (Lewis) becomes her suspect.

Obviously, a lot goes down in the near-100 episodes, but it's clear that it's done the job at keeping viewers entertained throughout its near-decade run given how many are still raving about it on social media.

The series, which is currently available to stream on Disney+, is none other than Homeland and you can take a look at the first season's trailer here:

Speaking of what 'drew them to the show', one Reddit user penned: "The emotional roller coaster that was Carrie Mathison, the systematic destruction of Nicholas Brody & the endless intrigue. I WANT A REUNION SEASON BEFORE 2026!!!"

A second chimed in, praising Carrie's 'messed up' character which seemingly matches the general tone of the show writing: "I was instantly drawn to Carrie, as I usually love messed up female characters. I was rooting for her from the start.

"And of course the post 9/11 spy stuff is what kept me on the edge of my seat for 8 seasons. I think this show is the perfect balance between a character-driven show and a thriller and that’s what makes it so unique."

Recalling the moment they first watched Homeland, another echoed: "I remember watching the pilot and being absorbed almost immediately by the tone and feel.

"The writing, the acting, the style, the music… everything about the show just struck me as perfect and different from anything else at the time.

"It also looked like the production value was a lot higher than the other shows that were on Showtime at the time, too, which helped it to stand out."

And while many shows can dip in quality as the seasons roll on, a lot of viewers think Homeland gets a new lease of life after season three, which some said was a low point for the show.

One viewer wrote: "Season 4 of Homeland is possibly one of the greatest rebound in the history of television."

Another agreed: "Best reinvention ever, like you said. Brought back everything that was great about the show in a new setting and raised the stakes even higher somehow!"

Homeland is currently available to stream on Disney+.
