Harlan Coben addresses Fool Me Once plot hole which left viewers confused

He took to Twitter to put the speculation to rest

If you haven't watched the series everyone's talking about yet, then you may want to look away now.

It's safe to say that we've all been pretty obsessed with Harlan Coben's latest Netflix addition, Fool Me Once, which first hit the streaming platform on New Year's Day.

Now, while many of us have been obsessing over the talented actors, the 'outstanding' storyline and the incredible costume department, some viewers have called out what they reckon is a major plot hole.

But, you've been warned, there are some pretty big spoilers ahead...

The thriller gives fans an incredible adaptation of the popular novel Fool Me Once, written and published by Coben in 2016.

The official Netflix premise of the series, which is the streaming platform's eighth Coben adaptation, reads: "Harlan Coben’s Fool Me Once follows Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) who is trying to come to terms with the brutal murder of her husband, Joe (Richard Armitage).

"But when Maya installs a nanny-cam to keep an eye on her young daughter, she is shocked to see a man she recognises in her house. Her husband, who she thought was dead...

"Detective Sergeant Sami Kierce (Akhtar) leads the homicide investigation into Joe's death while grappling with secrets of his own. Meanwhile, Maya's niece and nephew, Abby and Daniel, are trying to find the truth about their mother's murder, several months earlier.

"Are the two cases connected? Fool Me Once follows these characters on a thrilling hunt for the truth that will reveal shocking secrets and change their lives forever."

Now, at the end of the series, viewers finally learn that Maya was actually the one behind Joe's death, after discovering he had murdered her sister - and that he was prepared to murder her, too.

However, while that mystery was solved, viewers were left scratching their heads over why Maya's friend and fellow military officer, Shane, played by Emmet J. Scanlan, kept putting trackers on Maya's car.

The character could also be seen standing outside her house, looking very suspicious.

Many rushed to social media to share their confusion with one Reddit user hitting out: "What was Shane’s character for? I get that he was her friend from the military but was it him that was stalking her at her house and tracking her car etc?

Coben took to Twitter to clear up the alleged 'plot hole'.

"Was he obsessed with her? In love with her? He was under developed and I was convinced he was dodgy as soon as he came on the screen but he turned out to be a nice guy and a loyal friend to Maya."

Well, Coben decided to put all the speculation to bed once and for all and took to X, formerly Twitter, to explain the situation.

He penned: "Spoiler: You’re military police. Your best friend suffers PTSD. She is taking medication, lying to you, lost two close family members to murders, has you test a bullet — and says she’s seeing her dead husband.

"You might want to (track) keep an eye on her and her little girl…"

Yep, checks out.

Fool Me Once is currently available to stream on Netflix.
