Why Cher walked off stage during the Grammys after causing 'havoc'

The singer suffered quite the blunder at the Grammys while presenting Record of the Year on Sunday (1 February)

Cher has gone viral for causing absolute chaos at the Grammy Awards while reading out the Record of the Year winner.

In case you missed it, the annual star-studded awards ceremony took place at Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena on 1 February, with A-listers gathering together to celebrate the best talent in the world of music.

Viewers were treated to a slew of gags from host Trevor Noah, as well as amazing performances from the likes of Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, to name a few.

American rapper Kendrick Lamar was the biggest winner of the night, earning nine nominations and bagging a whopping five Grammys.

Meanwhile, Bad Bunny, who's set to headline the Super Bowl half-time show this weekend, took home three awards, including Album of the Year, for 'Debí Tirar Más Fotos'.

Lady Gaga and Kehlani also won two each, while British hitmaker Olivia Dean was awarded Best New Artist.

Among Lamar's awards was the impressive gong for Record of the Year, which the musician earned with his track 'Luther'.

And as we say, it was none other than Cher who announced the win - but things didn't go exactly to plan.

The 79-year-old initially came onstage to present the award, but was thrown off when she instead accepted her own lifetime achievement award.

After accepting the honour, she was ready to leave and began walking off the stage, before host Noah called her back to hand out Record of the Year.

He said: "Before you go, before you go, Cher, before you go, could, could we get you to announce the nominees? I could do it, but it’s not the same. Welcome back Cher, everybody."

The singer returned to stage to announce the nominees, before revealing the winner.

However, the audience was left confused when she declared that Luther Vandross had won, which would have been beyond the grave considering he died in 2005.

Cher was seemingly confused over whether she had to read from the teleprompter or envelope and declared: "And the Grammy goes to, oh, they told me it was going to be on the prompter, oh, and the Grammy goes to... 'Luther Vandross.'"

The camera then cut to SZA and Lamar laughing as they realised the mistake and got up to collect their award, while Cher then promptly corrected herself: “No, Kendrick Lamar!”

Cher wasn't entirely off-base as Vandross was the inspiration for the song, which sampled the late singer's vocals.

So, it looks like Cher was either confused after reading 'Luther' on the winner’s card.

Fans rushed to social media to laugh at the viral moment, with one penning on Twitter: "Cher announced Luther Vandross and was excited like he was alive LMAOOOOO."

While a second added: "Cher thought Luther Vandross won record of the year in 2026 I am SCREAMING she was genuinely excited LMAO."

A third quipped: "Cher saying the winner of record of the year was Luther Vandross after reading Luther on the card is so real."

And a fourth joked: "I guess Cher turned back time when she announced Luther Vandross as the winner."
