Timothée Chalamet once played a prank on his mum while she was naked, and people have been left pretty divided over it.

The 29-year-old A Complete Unknown star appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2019, where he shared the awkward anecdote with fans.

Responding to the question of whether he had been a decent kid growing up, Chalamet acknowledged that while he's well-behaved now, he still has a lot of 'making up' to do for his childhood antics.

"I used to go on these cruise ships with my mum," he began. "When I was, like, eight to 12 years old, we would do these cruise ships together."

Chalamet continued: "And we were pulling into port once, and she was getting out of a shower, she was drying herself, and she went on the balcony just to, like, kind of go, like, 'woo', as we were pulling into port, and just to, you know, be funny, I locked the balcony door."

He then pretended to be leaving the room, adding: "I thought it'd be really funny if I actually left the room and, gave it a minute or two minutes or something and let her back in.

"And I waited like three minutes and I didn't have my key card after - I realised."

At this point, the cruise ship was pulling up to the port.

DeGeneres asked: "Was she naked?"

"She was naked, yeah," the Hollywood A-lister went on. "That's not like a weird thing, though, when you're pre pubescent, right? Maybe I shouldn't brought that up."

Chalamet then explained how he 'ran the length of the ship a couple times' and was 'weeping' before finally getting a key card.

"When I came back in, she had taken, there was like a little foyer thing to put her feet and and she had covered herself with it," the Call Me By Your Name actor recalled.

He concluded: "I was devastated. I was really - she saw how devastated I was."

After watching the clip, people rushed to social media to share their thoughts, with a few clearly up in arms over the story.

One Instagram user hit out: "My kids are literally 8 and 12 and I would never be naked in front of them that is absolutely insane."

Others, however, couldn't have disagreed more with a second chiming in: "Oh please, you're ridiculous!"

Another quipped: "What are you talking about, its absolutely normal..."

"100% something my kids could’ve done. Not that I’ve ever went on a cruise ship with them, but if I would, they would," admitted someone else.

Another gushed: "Hilarious! And good on Mum for having fun... lol even though it went pear shape that day. Bet she didn’t do that again."

And a final Instagram added: "I think the moral of the story is that the apple didn’t fall far from the mama tree.

"Super cute story. That’s great they have a great relationship."
