Americans have been left utterly confused over how to spell the word 'cancelled' after seeing the way Taylor Swift spelt it, which has since sparked a major conspiracy theory online.
Swifties have shown no signs of calming down anytime soon ever since the 35-year-old 'Bad Blood' hit-maker released the latest details surrounding her upcoming album, titled The Life of a Showgirl.
The album, which is set to grace our years in just a few months on 3 October, features 12 brand-new songs including; 'The Fate of Ophelia', 'Elizabeth Taylor', 'Opalite', 'Father Figure', 'Eldest Daughter', 'Ruin the Friendship', 'Actually Romantic', 'Wi$h Li$t', 'Wood', 'CANCELLED!', 'Honey' and the titular 'The Life of a Showgirl (feat. Sabrina Carpenter)'.
But it's track number 10 that's sparked the latest chatter online, with many Taylor fans rushing to social media to share their speculation over why the word is spelt with two l's like 'cancelled', as opposed to the US spelling with just the one, 'canceled'.

"Does anyone know or have an idea of why Taylor used the British spelling of 'cancelled' rather than the US spelling 'canceled' for one of her upcoming songs?" asked one Reddit user.
Interestingly, the majority of those who dwell across the pond, however, had no idea that there were two different spellings of the word in the first place with many spelling it with two l's as a default.
One questioned: "… we use only one l in America?"
"As an American, 'canceled' looks so weird to me," confessed a second, while a third chimed in: "I didn’t even know that this was another word Americans spelt wrong."
A fourth wondered: "Since when are there two different spellings of that word?"
"This spelling is common in parts of the US. I've always done two LLs," explained a fifth, while a sixth shared: "Do we not spell it with two Ls here? I always have, and I've lived in the US all my life."
"I always spell 'cancelled' with two Ls and I’m California born and raised," offered another and a final Reddit user joked: "The mental drama I have in my head choosing which to spell it is more than most probably."
Other Swifties were convinced the spelling was far deeper than all that, speculating that the song is aimed at someone very specific.
"She spelled 'Canceled' with two 'Ls' because this is the British of spelling it," content creator Jordan Fairchild theorised. "So, what does that mean?" That means that whoever this is about is a British person.
"There are two people in mind that I can think of that this could be about, but I'm interested to see who you [her followers] think it's about."
Fairchild went on to suggest that the album could be listened to as a 'timeline of sorts', adding: "The beginning of the Eras Tour to the end?"
She continued: "If this is the case, this ['Cancelled'] most likely would be at the beginning, so I don't think it will do that, but this will definitely tell a story. 'Cancelled' is going to be about someone who is British, most likely."
But, as we say, this is all simply speculation and Taylor herself is yet to confirm nor deny such fan theories.
