Met Gala curse explained after people convinced it’s really a thing

The Met Gala is taking place tonight (5 May)

You might have heard of the Strictly Come Dancing curse, but what about the Met Gala?

All eyes will be on the red carpet tonight for the increasingly weird and wonderful outfits for the 2025 Met Gala theme of Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, but many will also be looking to see if any new couples appear.

Many fans are wondering if Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet will make it official this year, but given the success rate of many of the others, who could blame them for giving it a miss?

While Strictly has apparently claimed many relationships over the years when celebrities are teamed up with professional dancers in close quarters for weeks at a time, what is the Met Gala Curse?

What is the Met Gala Curse?

Fans say the curse happens when a couple hard launch their relationship together on the Met Gala red carpet, only to then split up not long after.

It's thought that the attention of the high profile event puts more pressure on a budding relationship, causing it to end.

One X user shared an explanation, writing: "Once a celebrity couple makes their red carpet debut at the highly coveted event, they end up calling it quits sometime after."

Another said a similar sentiment, as they wrote: "Hot take: met gala has a deadly curse for couples who make red carpet debuts and the list of casualties are a lot.…lowkey need them to stay away."

However, it's more than likely that it is all seemingly a coincidence, however, a few celeb couples have apparently fell victim to the 'curse' over the years.

Who has fallen victim to the curse?

There's quite the list of famous faces who debuted their relationship on the Met Gala red carpet only for it to then seemingly disintegrate not long after.

Others, like Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift, met at the event and had a whirlwind romance (who can forget THAT vest top) which went south quickly.

The curse seemingly dates back to 2003, when Hollywood actors Kirsten Dunst and Jake Gyllenhaal attended and then soon split, Cosmopolitan reports.

Who remembers that Christina Ricci and Chris Evans were a thing? After they attended the event in 2007, their relationship soon ended.

FKA Twigs and Robert Pattinson made their official debut on the carpet in 2015, before splitting in 2017 after reportedly becoming engaged. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez and The Weeknd were on the carpet together in 2017, as was Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez.

2018 was an incredibly bad year for a few former couples, with Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, Hailey Bieber and Shawn Mendes, Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse, and Elon Musk and Grimes all ending their relationships at some point afterwards.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello appeared at the Met Gala in 2021 before splitting the same year, and it was bad luck again for Shawn with Hailey Baldwin, who is now married to Justin Bieber.

Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal broke hearts when they confirmed that they were dating on the red carpet, but they then split in December 2022 after two years of dating.

Another couple who surprised everyone was Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, who attended in 2022, before their high-profile split in August of that year, with the reality TV star opening about their breakup on The Kardashians in 2023.

In 2024, Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter made their official debut... and well, we all know how that ended don't we?

Hopefully, this 'curse' won't strike any couples this year.
