What happens to your body if you stop having sex after Khloe Kardashian reveals she hasn’t done it in three years

The mum-of-two made the admission during the season seven premiere of The Kardashians

Khloé Kardashian has just revealed that she hasn’t had sex in three whole years.

Now, while our bedroom preferences and habits are completely unique to each and every single one of us, it's clear fans of the Kardashian clan are forever invested in their various romantic pursuits.

So, you can understand why so many reality TV fans were keen to hear 41-year-old Khloé's reasoning behind why she's avoided getting it on under the sheets for almost a third of a decade.

During the season seven premiere of The Kardashians, the mum of two explained her refreshingly candid response when she learned about fellow celeb Julia Fox's celibacy.

It all started when Simon Huck, who created gummy vitamin range Lemme with Khloé's oldest sister Kourtney, was telling her about the brand's upcoming campaign with Julia, who 'has not had sex in four years'.

Khloé then took the opportunity to share: "I haven't had sex in over three years."

"You're really not dating anyone, Khlo? There's no one on your roster?" Simon asked to which she simply replied 'Nope'.

And, when Simon asked the socialite if there was anyone she's 'DMing', Khloé doubled down, saying: "No. Not anyone I'm texting. I don't have any person's phone number."

"I don't even have nudes," she added.

Elsewhere in the episode, Khloé issued fans another update on her life, gushing: "I love being 40. Being 40 has been sensational. And I'm thrilled."

She continued: "I saw a meme, or a quote, or something, and it was like, 'Why are you so happy?' and the person said, 'Because I’m not dating.' And I’m like, yes, I actually feel great with that energy right now."

Good on you, Khlo!

But what actually happens to your body if you stop having sex, according to a sexpert?

Sex and relationship expert Christine Rafe spoke to the New York Post about what happens to the body and mind during a sexual 'dry spell'.

She explained that while there are physical, emotional, and psychological benefits to sex, 'this does not mean that there are negative consequences associated with not being sexually active'.

However, she described a temporary effect called 'deconditioning'.

"In the same way we might experience a reduced confidence, muscle tightness and overall deconditioning from not exercising, people who haven’t had sex, or who stop having sex for prolonged periods may experience deconditioning to sexual activities," Rafe explained.

This can include 'muscle tightness or soreness, difficulties in ejaculatory control and a loss of confidence in sexual activity'.

The expert emphasised that 'there is no substantive research or evidence concluding that there are negative health impacts for someone who chooses to not have sex'.

Still, she noted that sexual pleasure releases 'oxytocin, endorphins, serotonin and dopamine… our happy/feel-good chemicals' which boost mood, energy, and motivation, and reduce stress by lowering cortisol.

Rafe also mentioned that 'higher ejaculatory frequency in adulthood [is] correlated with a lowered rate of prostate cancer,' but this can be achieved without partnered sex.

Importantly, Rafe said that people can get similar benefits in other ways: "We can promote the production of these chemicals through lots of other activities such as movement, dancing, massage, meditation, singing, listening to music, laughing, experiencing something new and/or moderately challenging."

For lowering cortisol, 'meditation, exercise, sleep, healthy eating and setting boundaries' can help.

Regarding libido, Rafe reassured that fluctuations are normal, noting: "It’s very likely that you will experience fluctuations and changes in your experience of desire, arousal and pleasure throughout your life... over different life stages including puberty, relationship dynamics, parenthood, menopause and older age."

Ultimately, the sexpert concluded: "Sex can certainly be a component of a healthy lifestyle, but it is not essential for you to be healthy.

"If it's not causing you concern or impacting your life in any adverse ways, then you can absolutely live a healthy and fulfilling life without having sex!"
