Keith Urban 'breaks silence' on Nicole Kidman divorce after fans call singer out for changing lyric

Nicole Kidman filed for divorce from the country music star on 1 October, after 19 years of marriage

It's been almost a month since his split from wife Nicole Kidman was made public, but only now has Keith Urban decided to speak out.

Performing at one of his US concerts this week, the New Zealand star alluded to his personal strife in a fiery statement, whilst changing the lyrics to a song he previously revealed was about the actress.

News that Kidman, 58, had filed for divorce after 19 years of marriage broke on 1 October, with court documents citing the reason for the split as both 'marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences'. The pair's relationship dissolution filings also included a childcare plan agreed on by the couple, being that they share two daughters together - Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.

At the time that his break-up had been made public, 57-year-old Urban was in the midst of his High and Alive World Tour.

The week prior, a clip went viral showing the musician performing rather cosily with his utility player, Maggie Baugh, where she could be seen singing one of his own songs, 'The Fighter' alongside him on stage.

Viewers quickly clocked that, instead of singing the original lyrics, 'When they're tryna get to you, baby I'll be the fighter', Urban belted out: "When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player."

Baugh also reshared the clip on her own social media profile, captioning it: "Did Keith Urban just say that?"

Onlookers quickly began to question the nature of the bandmates' relationship, with some wondering whether close connections may have had a part to play in his split from Kidman.

Despite this speculation, however, Urban has this week demanded his fans stop reaching for explanations that aren't there.

Whilst performing in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday (26 Oct), the-father-of-two prepared to sing his 2002 track, 'You'll Think Of Me', which he previously dedicated to his ex-wife.

Beforehand, however, he told members of the audience there was no hidden meaning behind the number, which he later amended.

"I’ve been covering it like this for a long time," Urban explained. "Stop reading stuff into it."

The chart-topper then changed the original lyrics of that song from 'But you’ll think of me', to: "But I betcha think about me!"

Urban's remark comes just days after Kidman first alluded to their split whilst appearing in Vogue's cover interview on 8 October, where the Moulin Rouge bombshell was asked about life in her fifties.

"How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?" she cryptically asked in response.
