Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's matching tattoos now have a very ironic meaning after it was revealed this week that the pair were calling it quits.

Getting a matching tattoo with your partner can sound like a romantic idea at the time, but it's always worth thinking about the meaning it's going to have if the worst outcome ever occurred.

And for J.Lo and Ben Affleck, it's clear the two didn't really think ahead before they went under the needle.

Last Valentine's Day, Lopez revealed that she and her husband had gotten matching tattoos together.

Fans filled the comments with support for the two and the wholesome way they were displaying 'commitment' to each other.

But just over a year on from the cute gesture, J.Lo has filed for divorce.

J.Lo’s ribcage tattoo is an infinity symbol which features the pair's initials embedded within the lines, while Ben opted for two crossed arrows with their initials on the side of his torso.

The tats sent a clear message of their intentions to be together for the rest of their lives - with both infinity symbols and cupid’s arrows being unmistakable symbols of true love.

But of course, it's not quite how their story has ended.

Court documents show Lopez filed for divorce on 20 August in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, with the BBC stating that both will need to disclose their financial information, including current income, expenses, properties and debts.

No details of a prenup were listed in the documents.

But the tattoos weren't the only sentimental gesture that the couple shared.

Ben proposed to J.Lo with a ring estimated to be worth $5 million, engraved with the words 'not going anywhere'.

We'll let you decide if that's slightly creepy or cute, but either way, it's another form of commitment that didn't exactly work out.

Their romance began after they met while working on the set of the 2003 crime film Gigli.

The stars planned to get married in 2004, but ended the relationship before any plans were made.

Twenty years on, they decided to rekindle their relationship.

In a statement in 2022 announcing their Las Vegas wedding, J.Lo said: "Love is beautiful. Love is kind.

"And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient."
