Hairy Bikers' Si King gives emotional update on life without best friend and co-star Dave Myers

They've been nominated for a top award

The nation’s hearts were collectively broken after the tragic loss of Hairy Bikers star, Dave Myers, following his death last month.

66-year-old Dave had been battling cancer for two years prior to his death.

After the loss of his best friend and co-star, Si King’s tribute to Myers included: “My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.

"I wish you God’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world.”

The last episode of Hairy Bikers Go West aired on 19 March and had fans in floods of tears, with scenes being filmed just months before Myers’ passing.

In an emotional moment, King tells Myers: “We planned to go west, mate, and we made it.”

Myers then replies: “We have, and it’s been tough at times.”

He proceeded to open up about his battle with cancer and addresses the camera: “I had chemotherapy all the time we’ve been filming. It hasn’t been easy… (but) we’ve got there, and it’s just a wonderful feeling."

In a poignant last sentence, Myers concludes: “Who knows what the future holds? But for the moment, I’m living in the present and it’s pretty fine, I tell you."

A viewer at the time wrote: “Seeing Dave and especially Si and the end really broke my heart. Dave was such a trooper and it was a very fitting send off.

"Yes, I was in tears at the end too."

King has opened up further about the loss of his best mate, when addressing the Hairy Bikers’ nomination for Personality of the Year at the Fortnum And Mason Food And Drink Awards.

Taking to the Hairy Bikers X account, King penned: “Dave and I were so chuffed to be nominated once again for the Fortnum & Mason Food Personality of the Year Award for the 4th year running. Dave was so proud of this award, particularly because it’s voted for by our loyal followers and fans, the people who matter most to us.

“It’s really strange for us all not to have Dave around but for now, we will keep posting on the Hairy Bikers socials to keep in touch with all those people who have been so kind over many years and particularly in recent weeks.

“We’ll also keep you updated on the events and projects which will live on and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at some of the Summer festivals this year. Si x

“Voting closes at 12 Noon, 29th March 2024.”

Their fellow nominees are James Martin, Big Zuu, Jamie Oliver, Tom Kerridge and Dame Mary Berry.

The Hairy Bikers’ social media comments were flooded with people sending messages of support and confirming they had voted for the duo.

One person wrote: “Just voted. I cooked your liver and bacon recipe at the weekend and my partner thought it was lovely- and he hadn’t had liver for years. I’ve really loved the latest series. You and Dave were the embodiment of true friendship.”

Another added: “Voted. It would be a wonderful accolade for a beautiful friendship that warmed our hearts.”
