Savage reason Ricky Gervais didn't attend Golden Globes - despite winning

The 67-year-old The Office star was not in attendance at the 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards this evening (11 January)

While Nikki Glaser seems to be doing a stand-up job as the host for the 2026 Golden Globe Awards for the second year in a row, fans of the ceremony will no doubt still be nostalgic for the chaotic days when Ricky Gervais was host.

This year's ceremony is all about 'honouring excellence in film and American television productions', and we've already seen a load of gongs get dished out.

And one of those awards went to none other than British comedian Gervais, who has hosted the Golden Globes five times, in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020.

Gervais took home the victory for the Best Stand-up Comedy Performance for his Mortality Netflix special.

Other stars in the category included: Bill Maher for Is Anyone Else Seeing This?, Brett Goldstein for The Second Best Night of Your Life, Kevin Hart for Acting My Age, Kumail Nanjiani for Night Thoughts and Sarah Silverman for Postmortem.

However, ahead of the evening, Gervais revealed exactly why he wouldn't be attending - despite being nominated.

The actor-comedian, who has won four Golden Globe awards across two decades, recently revealed that the reason he won't be attending the Los Angeles evening is that, simply put, it's 'too far to go'.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s This Cultural Life, he explained: "I didn’t have any joy watching my fat face on screen. I just want peace and quiet...

"I’m probably not going to the Golden Globes … It’s too far to go. It takes a lot to get me off the couch with my cat and my girlfriend [Jane Fallon] watching Netflix. I love the work, I love writing, I love creating, I love stand-up, but all the other stuff I could really do without."

Given that he wasn't there on the night, presenter Wanda Sykes accepted the award on his behalf, taking the opportunity to deliver a jab towards him as she asked if she could 'borrow' fellow winner Teyana Taylor's speech.

"Because he would like to thank God," Sykes said before adding: "And the trans community."

The comment in question appears to reference Gervais making jokes about 'taboo subjects' after his SuperNature Netflix special drew criticism.

The special saw him make a string of - what he describes as - ironic and satirical jokes about trans people, female comedians and Aids.

Directly to the 'transphobia' accusations, Gervais said: "Of course I support trans rights. I support all human rights and trans rights are human rights.

"Live your best life, use your preferred pronouns, be the gender that you feel that you are."
