It is understood that adrenal carcinoma - which affects the kidney's adrenal glands that produce hormones delivering instructions to every vital organ in the body - is a somewhat rare form of cancer.

Anna - who underwent both chemotherapy and immunotherapy - leaves behind two daughters, Kaitlyn, 11, and Kylee, eight.

Her family shot to fame after starring in the reality series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, which centred on Anna's youngest sister Alana 'Honey Boo Boo' Shannon's life with her mother, father and three siblings.

Although Anna wasn't considered the main star of the show, she stole the hearts of millions of viewers after birth to daughter Kaitlyn in the finale of the first season.

Mama June told her fans about Anna's diagnosis earlier this year, saying: "We know it's terminal. She's stage 4. She's not gonna go into remission.

"We've all accepted that, so I just tell people one day at a time 'cause you never know."

Just two days before Anna's passing, the US reality star implored with her huge social media following to pray for her ailing daughter.

"Y’all we are asking for prayers for our family as we are going through this process," she told her followers.

"We really appreciate y’all for all the thoughts and prayers and we will update y’all whenever we can.

Just know that all of your thoughts and your prayers are very much appreciated during this time, she explained, adding the hashtags, '#mamajune #cancersucks #family #prayers."
