Queer teen rom-com The Half Of It just landed on Netflix - and just watching the trailer is making us feel all the emotions at once.
This is no run-of-the-mill romance flick. Yes, it's all about small town love, but there are no boy-meets-girl clichés here.
Firstly, the characters are super authentic and there's plenty of snappy dialogue to balance out the (frankly adorable) mushier moments.

Plus, this is a movie that's as much about unexpected friendship as it is heart-thudding teen love.
The film follows Ellie Chu, The Half Of It's whip-smart, queer Chinese-American lead character.
Ellie (played by Leah Lewis) feels like a square peg in a round hole living in the tiny town of Squahamish with her father.
She's the butt of her classmates' jokes - but her bookishness enables her to run a small-time business writing and selling essays.

"The good thing about being different in a town like this, is that no one expects you to be like them," narrates Ellie in the trailer.
The guitar-playing introvert gets an unexpected business offer from popular jock Paul (Daniel Diemer) who wants Ellie to write a love letter to school beauty Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire).
Ellie reluctantly agrees and unwittingly becomes a kind of love coach for Paul, teaching him the art of conversation ("it's like ping-pong!") and sensitive messaging ("I get nervous when you're close").

Things inevitably get complicated when Ellie begins to develop feelings for Aster and realises that she, much like Paul, is hiding behind a mask.
The Half Of It gives us hints of so many acclaimed movies and series that we know and love - but with a fresh identity all of its own.
We're getting echoes of the To All The Boys I've Loved Before franchise from the letter writing theme, a touch of Juno in the awkward-funny dialogue, and a Sex Education vibe from the modern characterisation.
Basically, we're ready to write The Half Of It the perfectly formed love letter it deserves.
