Mare Of Easttown: Kate Winslet Stopped Director From Cutting Out A 'Bulgy Bit Of Belly' From Sex Scene

We've been hooked on Mare of Easttown, which stars the phenomenal Kate Winslet as troubled detective Mare investigating a murder in a small Philadelphia town.

While she's always showstopping and stunning no matter what role she plays, Kate insisted that she was presented in a realistic manner while playing Mare - wanting to eschew heavy make-up and ultra supple skin to show what a woman in her forties actually looks like.

And her commitment to being real in the role extended to the star, 45, standing firm over showing a 'bulgy bit of belly' in a sex scene when director Craig Zobel offered to cut it out.

Recalling the moment to the New York Times, Kate said she told the director: "Don't you dare."

"[My character is] a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face which moves in a way that is a synonymous with her age," she explained. "I think we're starved of that a bit."

Kate continued that she was now considering giving up nude scenes altogether, having previously stripped off for Titanic, Little Children, and her Oscar-winning performance in 2008's The Reader.

"I'm just not that comfortable doing it anymore. It's not even really an age thing, actually," she said. "There comes a point where people are going to go, 'Oh, here she goes again.'"

The sex scene was not the only thing Kate insisted upon when Mare of Easttown was released on HBO Max.

She said that she "raised eyebrows" when she sent back the series' promo poster twice, complaining that she felt it had been "too retouched" as she knows just "how many lines" she has at the sides of her eyes.

Kate added that she found herself having to train for the role of Mare, but again didn't want to show an unrealistic portrayal for a woman her age.

"It's nice to sense that Mare was once strong in her youth, but I didn't want to make her an impossible, superhuman forty-something-year-old," she previously told Emmy Magazine.

"Mostly women aren't like that. We do what we can in the midst of the juggle of everything else."

It's about time we can see what women really look like on screen.
