Kate Winslet's Mare finally solved the brutal murder of teen mum Erin McMenamin and viewers were left 'heartbroken' after the shocking details surrounding her death - as well as the culprit - were unveiled.
Mare left no stone unturned, and after dozens of red herrings, twists and turns, schoolboy Ryan Ross was revealed as the murderer who shot and killed Erin. Earlier in the episode, Ryan's dad John falsely confessed to accidentally shooting and killing Erin when she threatened to tell his wife Lori about their affair.
John is charged with criminal homicide and he asks Lori to care for DJ, his son with Erin, so that the child has a home. Case closed? Well, not exactly...

When Mr Carroll calls Mare to his house to report items that keep going missing from his shed, he reveals that a gun was returned to the shed out of the blue with two bullets missing. It happens to be the same type of gun that killed Erin and the only people who have access to the shed are him and John and Lori's son Ryan.
Mare later interrogates Ryan and he reveals that his dad made him agree to keep his affair with Erin a secret after he found out and that things were over between himself and Erin.
But when little Ryan saw the pair chatting on the night of her death, he got angry. He brought Mr. Carroll's gun when he met up with her to scare her and accidentally shot her during a struggle. John and Billy took care of Erin's body and Lori soon found out what her son did but kept it a secret from Mare.
