We may never see a full third series of Doctor Foster, but show creator Mike Bartlett has announced he's toying with writing a new spin-off.

We've already seen one spin-off based on the characters from Parminster, with BBC One's Life following Anna Barker (played by Victoria Hamilton) and her move to Manchester and reinvent herself as Belle after splitting from her playboy husband.

Now, Mike has revealed he'd be keen to follow the story of Tom Foster (played by Tom Taylor), the troubled son of Gemma and Simon, who ran away from his warring parents at the end of the second season.

"I do think about Tom quite a lot," he told the Daily Star newspaper. "He's gone and Gemma doesn't know where. I feel I don't know the answer and Gemma doesn't know the answer. It has been left in a limbo state.

"He's out there doing something and there's a story to be told in some way. One day I might tell that story. The characters stay alive and you come back to them."

The first two series of Doctor Foster were hugely popular with viewers, with Suranne Jones' portrayal of cheated wife Gemma seeing her pick up the BAFTA from Best Actress in 2016.

However, Suranne's hectic schedule has seen her rule out any chance of her ever returning to the role.

Speaking to Radio Times earlier this year in regards to a third season, she made it clear that the door on Doctor Foster was closed.

"I haven't said that before in interviews, as I tend to say: who knows?" she explained. "I loved it, I love Mike Bartlett, I love [the producers] Drama Republic.

"Series one was amazing, series two, equally, peaked at nearly ten million viewers and pushed in crazy directions. But I think Gemma's done."

Mike himself has also ruled out a third season, citing he would only return to the heart of the series should there be a vital story to be told.
