Taylor Swift left stunned after her piano starts playing itself during live show

The singer had to ask the crowd if they could hear it too

Taylor Swift was left stunned when her piano started playing a tune entirely by itself during a live gig in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Admittedly it wasn't a very good tune - nothing compared to Swift's tracks - but considering pianos have neither brains or fingers, it was pretty impressive.

The magical moment came as Swift prepared to entertain thousands of fans on her third night at the Gillette Stadium on Sunday (21 May).

She sat down at her piano ready to play a track, but before she got going the piano cut her off by firing out some notes of its own.

"I didn't play that," Swift told the crowd, quickly attempting to offer an explanation for the ghostly performance.

Before she could, however, she was interrupted by more notes from the piano, causing the singer's jaw to drop in shock.

"Oh my- do you hear that?," she asked. "Is that happening for you too? Okay, I'm just gonna do another song on guitar, that's insane."

Self-playing pianos do exist, and anyone who grew up with an electric keyboard will probably be all too familiar with the built-in tunes you could play at the press of a button, but Swift's shock at the situation indicates it wasn't a planned stunt.

So, was she joined on stage by a ghost? Did an overly-keen fan attempt to get close to Swift by hiding inside the piano? That probably would have made for a more exciting story, but unfortunately it's not the case.

Instead, we have the rain to blame for the rogue notes.

Swift's third performance at the Gillette Stadium came after a particularly rainy performance the night before, when she performed for hours amid the downpour, which soaked the singer, the stage and the instruments.

Swift explained: "Long story short, I get to my acoustic set to play last night - you know when you've been in a bath for too long and your fingers are so pruned? I looked at my fingers and it was like I'd been in a bath for two and a half hours.

"So another thing that has happened is that this has clearly broken my keyboard. Because this was like literally under water. I didn't know how any of the instruments were working last night. So this is broken - I'm just gonna get the guitar."

Ever the professional, Swift was able to continue her performance without any of her instruments putting her off further - though I suppose at least she can always rely on the piano if she needs a bit of a break from playing herself!
