We were all a little heartbroken when Jesse Williams’ character departed from Grey’s Anatomy last May - and not just because we were missing Dr. Avery’s piercing green eyes, either.

The Season 17 finale saw Jackson leaving Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital whilst he was still kicking - something you’d know to be a rare occurrence if you’re an OG Grey’s Anatomy fan - as he headed up his new role in the Harper Avery Foundation in Boston, alongside April Kepner.

Check out the emotional moment he left here:

But it seems that ‘Mr. Green Eyes’ (Mark Sloan’s words - not mine), is set to make a return in the upcoming series and subsequently heal all of our broken hearts, E! News confirmed.

The 41-year-old actor, who departed from the medical drama after a whopping 12 seasons under the bright lights of the operating theatre, will return in his iconic role in an upcoming episode in season 19.

The episode, which is set to air on 3 November in the US, will see Jackson heading back to the flagship hospital series in a guest-starring role.

In the episode named 'When I Get to the Border', Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) heads to Boston to see Jackson in an undoubtedly emotional moment.

But fans of the actor will not only get to see his work on screen but behind the camera, as Williams is also directing the episode - marking his fourth run of directing duties on the show in total.

Jackson’s outspoken mum, Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) is also set to appear in the forthcoming episode.

But if you cast your mind back to the moment when you last laid eyes on Jackson on the series, he and April (Sarah Drew) caused huge excitement among fans when they made out in a lift at the hospital - confirming all our suspicions about their on-again-off-again relationship.

Previously, Japril (that’s Jackson and April, for those of you shipping the couple), left their home in Seattle for ‘The Hub of the Universe’ Boston alongside their daughter Harriet, so that Dr. Avery could take over his family’s foundation.

Whilst they already confirmed their love for one another, there sadly won’t be any sweet on-screen moments for the pair this time around, as Drew is not set to appear in the upcoming episode.

You can watch season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy on Disney+ from 26 October.
