PSA to all Grey's Anatomy fans: one of the show's most beloved characters may be making a return.

Over its 21 seasons, Shonda Rhimes' medical drama has introduced a whole host of characters that viewers have fallen in love with.

It's also killed off so many that fans can't listen to Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars without hyperventilating (rest in peace Derek Shepherd).

But fans' all-time favourite characters will always be the original five: Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Izzie Stephens, Alex Karev, and George O'Malley.

And it's good news, as the actor behind one of the beloved surgical interns has teased a potential return.

Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang has been greatly missed since she left Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital and the show in 2014, nine years after the drama first aired.

Much to the delight of fans, her character made a brief reappearance via text back in season 17.

At the time, one fan wrote on social media: "Ok at least we got a Cristina text appearance I'm happy."

Another commented: "I love that #GreysAnatomy brings Cristina back through text. BEST PART OF THE SHOW!"

And Oh herself shared that she loved the fact that her former character was able to live on through the text messages.

"I am glad for the show to use the character as they see fit. Absolutely," she said. "The character should still be there to service the story - and so, yay!"

Now, while she hasn't confirmed anything, in a recent interview with Entertainment Live, Oh revealed that she longer completely dismisses the idea of reprising the iconic role.

The actress, who has since gone on to star in Killing Eve, said: "For the longest time, it has always been a hard no. And it's just... I don't know. I just don't know.

"When you finish something, it's a deep process... I just cannot tell you... I can't stress to you enough how consciously I tried to fully process leaving."

Sandra then added: "I don't feel the need to revisit, but I also profoundly understand the audience's love for this character, because I've seen it for the past 10 years. That's the part that makes me just go, 'hmmm'."

Grey's Anatomy stars Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson) and Jessica Capshaw (Arizona Robbins) discussed the potential comeback on their Call It What It Is podcast.

During the podcast, Capshaw claimed she heard that Oh 'maybe might come back'.

"She's never said that before," she said, with Luddington agreeing: "No she has not."

Luddington continued: "In the past, it's sort of been, 'I've moved on to new waters,' and she obviously loves the show so much, but it didn't seem like there would be a return of Cristina Yang happening anytime soon.

"And maybe it's still not happening anytime soon, but the fact that she would be open to it."

We've got everything crossed!
