House of The Dragon came to an end this week, leaving many fans searching for their next fix of fantasy.

Just like when Game of Thrones left our screens, as well as disappointing the vast majority of its loyal fans, the show also left a big hole in people's lives, with many asking just one question: what next?

Well, this time around, we have an answer for them.

The hit Netflix show has been compared to Game of Thrones due to its brutality, with some branding it 'one of the best series in history'. Which, I think you'll agree, is quite the claim.

So, no pressure.

That series I am talking about is The Last Kingdom. Check out the trailer here:

For those of you who aren't really familiar with it, here's a bit of background.

Based on The Saxon Stories, a set of historical fiction novels by author Bernard Cornwell, the bloody series first aired in 2015 and has grown a huge following of fans.

Set during the second half of the 9th Century, it centres on Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) as he tries to survive Anglo-Saxon England, threatened with being overrun by Viking invaders.

"Captured as a boy and raised by Danes after his uncle usurps his birthright, Uhtred comes to identify himself as Danish but misfortune and hopes of reclaiming Bebbanburg drive him into the service of Wessex, the titular last kingdom of the Saxons," the synopsis reads.

"From there, the story revolves around Uhtred's conflicting loyalties between the Danes and King Alfred, the man who dares to dream of a united England that can stand up to the invaders."

The Last Kingdom is being called 'one of the best series in history'.
Netflix

The fifth and final season landed earlier this year, and was met with rave reviews.

One user said: "Extremely captivating from its soundtrack to its staging in battle through history, everything, in general, is transmitted in an impressive way.

"This season has been really moving and for me, it is one of the best series in history. Masterpiece 10/10."

Another chipped in: "The Last Kingdom is my favourite Netflix show. Its series finale far surpassed Game of Thrones finale!"

“The Last Kingdom is the best show on Netflix," put a third.

While another added: "What a show. Almost had me in tears, the last scene of the final episode. Anyone who hasn’t watched this show is genuinely missing out. 10/10 from me."

High praise, very high praise.

The Last Kingdom is available to watch on Netflix now.
