The Adam Project Viewers Can't Get Over Catherine Keener's Hilarious CGI Ageing

The Adam Project Viewers Can't Get Over Catherine Keener's Hilarious CGI Ageing

"She looks like a Sim".

Netflix's new time travel film, The Adam Project, has mostly satisfied viewers craving a heartfelt, sci-fi adventure.

However, for some watchers, the CGI de-ageing technology used for Catherine Keener's character has proved to be so distracting it has sparked comparisons to The Sims video game series.

The film tells the story of Adam Reed (played by Ryan Reynolds), a pilot who travels back in time from 2050 to prevent the invention of time travel.

Catherine Keener, who plays the film’s antagonist Maya Sorian, portrays a younger version of herself and special digital effects have been used to make her appear younger.

Maya wants to stop Adam before he succeeds in putting a stop to time travel and capture him and take him back to the future.

However many viewers have pointed out that the de-ageing effect is extremely distracting, with some people jokingly comparing the result to other bad CGI they’ve spotted in films.

"The Adam Project was really cute and entertaining except I feel REALLY sorry for Catherine Keener's worse-than-tron-legacy CGI de-aging," said one viewer on Twitter.

Another social media user quipped: "Can't get over how badly they botched the deaging of Catherine Keener's character in The Adam Project, she looks like a Sim".

Filmmaker Abner Pastoll also joked about the CGI, writing: "The de-aged/CG/deepfaked/whatever-the-hell-they-did young version of Catherine Keener in THE ADAM PROJECT is freaking uncanny valley".

While someone else shared: "It’s horrible and super freaky. Couldn’t help but laugh at it."

A fan critiqued the CGI and said: "I loved everything except CGI Catherine Keener. That was just bad."

In related news, viewers are convinced the film has a hidden reference to Back to the Future.

Adam from the future (Reynolds), young Adam (Walker Scobell) and their father Louis Reed (Mark Ruffalo) meet at a remote motel named Pine Ridge.

The name and logo of the motel is definitely hard to miss and is eerily similar to the Twin Pines Mall in the 1985 classic.
