Netflix has confirmed that thriller series The Watcher has been renewed for a second season.

The series, which starred Bobby Cannavale, Naomi Watts, and Jennifer Coolidge, was based on a true story about a young family that move into their dream home in the suburbs, only to receive correspondence from a disturbing neighbour.

Parents Dean (Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Watts) think they've found the perfect home for their family in Westfield, New Jersey.

But it's not long before they discover that their dream house is being haunted by an anonymous threatening stalker who calls themselves 'the watcher'.

Every so often, the family receive a truly unsettling letter from 'the watcher' who describes the recently purchased home as their 'obsession.'

What's worse is that they can prove it, telling Dean and Nora private details about their family that no one else would know.

People were eager to find out which one of the Brannock's creepy neighbours were behind the ominous letters, and it wasn't long before the mini-series shot up the Netflix charts.

Despite it's success, though, viewers were furious when they made it to the end of the season to find that 'the watcher' is never revealed.

Although the couple's private investigator Theodora Birch (Noma Dumezweni) does confess to being 'the watcher', explaining that she was the previous owner of the house but had to sell it to pay for her cancer treatment.

But, at the end of the series, when Dean and Nora attend Theodora's funeral, her daughter reveals that it wasn't true - Theodora only claimed to be 'the watcher' so she could solve the case and bring the couple some peace.

Assuming that this one a limited series, fans were obviously outraged at this.

But now that there's officially a second season in the works, maybe they will find out who 'the watcher' is after all!

Also coming back for a second (and third!) season is Monster, after its phenomenal first season.

The first season, which focused on the story of notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, quickly became one of Netflix's most successful shows, and sat at the top of the charts for weeks after it premiered.

As a result, the Ryan Murphy project is going to be developed into an anthology series, focusing on 'other monstrous figures who have impacted society'.

Speaking on the renewed series', Netflix’s head of global TV Bela Bajaria commented: "Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher.

"The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on Monster along with Eric Newman on The Watcher are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world.

"The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan’s distinct original voice which created cultural sensations and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes.”
