Disney and Pixar have released a brand new trailer for the upcoming film Lightyear, which delves deeper into Buzz Lightyear's backstory.

Watch the trailer below:

In the Toy Story cannon, the Buzz Lightyear toy was inspired by a real life space ranger. Set to David Bowie’s song Starman, the trailer gives Toy Story fans a first look at his origins.

The film reveals how Buzz, a young test pilot, became the Space Ranger that we all know him to be today.

Captain America star Chris Evans takes over the voice role from Tim Allen, who has voiced Buzz in all four Toy Story films as well as in a number of shorts and spin-offs.

The voice cast also includes Peter Sohn, Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi , Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Dale Soules, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

Pete Docter, the mastermind behind Pixar’s critically acclaimed and beloved classics Soul, Inside Out and Up wrote the screenplay for Lightyear.

The feature length animated film is directed by Angus MacLane, who directed the 2013 short Toy Story of Terror!

Lightyear was announced in December 2020. Chris has described playing Buzz as 'a dream come true'.

"The phrase 'a dream come true' gets thrown around a lot, but I've never meant it more in my life. Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep," he said.

"I can't believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else. Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day."

Lightyear will be released on 17th June 2022.
