Major debate sparked as millennials defend beloved clothing item that Gen Z haven't discovered yet

Another fashion staple has entered the debate

As the cultural gap between Gen Z and millennials seemingly widens, another item of clothing has been thrown into the debate.

And apparently, views on the go-to summer outwear staple differ greatly depending on which decade you were born in.

This isn't the first time that items of clothing have totally segregated two different generations.

Earlier this summer, a clip went viral showing an entire venue of girls wearing trainers in a club leaving older babies (otherwise known as millennials, or people aged between 28–43 years old) absolutely shook.

And these supposed Gen Z trend-starters (aged between 12 and 27) were equally horrified to imagine what it must have been like to wear heels to the club - another staple of Noughties nights out.

As we say, however, this week, denim jackets - or 'jean jackets', if you're from across the pond - have somehow divided social media users around the world, with some mid-30s folk blown away that youngsters have been slamming the wardrobe staple as 'old school'.

The controversy first kicked off after one TikTok user - who goes by the username @starbirdb on the video-sharing app - shared a clip imploring with her fellow female users to 'hang up' their denim outerwear.

The short-form vid quickly went viral, accumulating a staggering 1.3 million views within a matter of days, with the user, Birdie, attempting to remind fashionistas that they do have 'options' when it comes to other types of coats and jackets, and should 'retire' their denim numbers.

"This is a PUBLIC SERVICE Millennial announcement for my 80s and 90s baby girls. Im tired of them blue jackets," she wrote in the caption.

First brought to the world in the 1950s, the 60s and 70s then saw fringed, bedazzled and cropped variations of the jackets.

And by the time the 90s and Noughties came around, the constant appearances of denim on star-studded red carpet events and during A-list attendances meant they retained their popularity among shoppers.

I mean, who could forgot Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake's all-denim look of 2001, which they wore to the American Music Awards.

Naturally, many wearers of go-to denim outerwear immediately jumped to the defence of jean jackets after the controversial TikTok began trending online, insisting they're one of the only clothing items that will forever remain a timeless classic.

"The congregation has collectively spoken and said no! Very respectfully!!!" one hit back in the comments below.

Another alleged: "Don’t worry, in a couple years Gen Z will be claiming Jean jackets as a cute new trend."

"Respectfully, we’re keeping the Jean jacket. Also why are you calling it a blue Jean jacket? makes you sound older than us," a third teased.
