The husband of Princess Anne has issued an update on his wife's health after she was rushed to hospital following an incident involving a horse on Sunday evening.

News broke on Monday that the 73-year-old Princess Royal had 'sustained minor injuries and concussion' following an incident at her home on the Gatcombe Park estate on Sunday evening (23 June).

An official statement from Buckingham Palace at the time read: "The Princess Royal has sustained minor injuries and concussion following an incident on the Gatcombe Park estate yesterday evening.

"Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation and is expected to make a full and swift recovery.

"The King has been kept closely informed and joins the whole Royal Family in sending his fondest love and well-wishes to The Princess for a speedy recovery."

Anne had suffered a head injury after being kicked by a horse, with an ambulance immediately dispatched to take her to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where she underwent the appropriate tests and treatments for a head injury before being diagnosed with concussion.

A spokesperson for the palace later confirmed that Princess Anne would remain in hospital for the time being, saying that she was 'recovering well, is in a comfortable condition and is being kept in hospital as a precautionary measure for further observation'.

“Her Royal Highness is receiving appropriate expert care," they said. "No further details are being shared at this stage.

Since then, she has remained in Southmead Hospital under observation.

Now, in an update supplied by her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, it is understood that the Royal is 'recovering slowly'.

Sir Tim was seen today departing from the main Brunel building at Southmead Hospital just before 2pm, having spent two and a half hours with his wife.

Asked whether she would be leaving hospital on Wednesday, he told press: "She’ll be out when she’s ready."

Anne - who made her last public appearance at Royal Ascot on Thursday last week (20 June) - is expected to leave hospital before the end of the week.

This isn't the first time Anne has been injured while horse riding.

At the Olympics of 1976, she suffered a severe fall at a jump when her horse became trapped in a boggy mud.

She subsequently described her memory as 'almost non-existent for that day'.

Since then, her love of horses hasn't dwindled, and the Princess recently appeared at the Trooping the Colour earlier this month (15 June) where she showed off her equestrian skills while riding her horse, Noble.
