After sealing victory yesterday against former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in New York City's mayoral elections, Zohran Mamdani credited both his progressive values, and his youth.
"The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate," the politician told East Coast celebrants. "I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this."
At the time, Mamdani went on to promise he'd 'wake up each morning with a singular purpose', to 'make this city better for you than it was the day before'.
"New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change."

By the sounds of things, however, prior to his speech, a number of listeners hadn't quite realised how young Mamdani was.
As well as making history as the 'Big Apple's' first Muslim mayor - along with being first of both South Asian heritage, and the first born in Africa, to assume the powerful position - Mamdani is the city's youngest leader in over a century.
His wife has already broken a similarly impressive record, becoming the first-ever Gen Zer to take on the role of NYC's first lady.

For those in need of a reminder, Mamdani married to Rama Duwaji - a Syrian-American illustrator and animator, whom he met on Hinge - earlier this year in a City Hall ceremony, with the politician later joking in an interview: "So there is still hope in those dating apps."
Both the mayor and his Mrs' ages have seemingly blown the minds of hordes of onlookers, who had no idea the baby-faced pair are, in fact, as young as they look.
Mamdani is 34, whilst Duwaji is just 28.

Taking to social media over this apparently blindsiding blow, one X user jibed: "Mamdani’s wife is literally my age. It’s so over."
Another admitted of the new mayor: "Gotta be honest lowk feeling bad that mamdani's only 2 years older than me and now has the keys to the greatest city."
"Mamdani's wifey is one year older than me she's WINNING IN LIFE," a third gushed of Duwaji, whilst a fourth added: "Mamdani is only 34? I’d be shocked if he doesn’t become POTUS someday."
Another went on to question: "You mean Mamdani is 34? Unbelievable."
