Melania Trump opened up about her controversial jacket which caused chaos in the media during Donald Trump’s last term in the office.

Now that Trump is back as the 47th president of the United States of America, Melania is once again the nation’s first lady.

But there is one moment which saw her become public enemy number one, and it all began with a simple jacket adorned with the words: “I really don't care, do u?”

The timing of this fashion choice was particularly controversial because she was actually on her way to visit a migrant detention centre with children held inside, so people immediately flagged this as her telling the world how she felt about the kids and their situation.

The centre housed 55 children, and some of them had been separated from their parents because of Trump's zero-tolerance policy towards illegal immigration

The moment became a huge deal, with everyone wanting to know, why did she wear a jacket that said, ‘I Don’t Care’ when she was going to visit impoverished and suffering children?

What could it possibly mean, and who was it aimed at?

Well, she cleared it all up in an exclusive interview with Tom Llamas at ABC News in 2018.

Sitting down for a tell-all, Melania explained her reasoning behind the jacket, and what it really meant to her.

She began: “You know I often asking myself, if I would not wear that jacket, if I will have so much media coverage.

“And it’s obvious I didn’t wear the jacket for the children. I wore the jacket to go on the plane and off the plane and it was for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticising me.”

She added that she wanted to show them, that she doesn’t ‘care’.

The First Lady explained: “You could criticise whatever you wanna say, you can say, but it will not stop me to do what I feel is right.”

When asked whether she was ‘sending a message’, Melania revealed that it ‘was kind of a message’ to her haters.

The host then asked what ‘compelled’ her to wear it, and she said: “After the visit I put it back on because I see how media got upset about it, obsessed about it.

“They got so obsessed, and I said, ‘like, you know what? That’s what I’m talking about’.”

Melania went on to say that she would ‘prefer’ that the media and people would ‘focus on what I do and, on my initiatives, than what I wear’.

However, not everyone is convinced.

One person wrote: “Everyone knows the most effective and classy way to let people know you don't care is to wear a jacket saying you don't care while on your way to visit children imprisoned by your husband. And have your staff deny that the jacket had a message.”

Another said: “’I want the media to concentrate on what I'm doing and Not what I'm wearing so I wore insensitive/inflammatory clothing, when I found out the media had gone insane about what I was *wearing I made sure to wear it again’ ‘That's how I make sure the media reports what I'm doing’.”
