Every war Donald Trump claims to have ended during his presidency

The 79-year-old Republican made a series of false and misleading claims during his UN address on Tuesday (23 September)

Here's a list of every war United States President Donald Trump claims to have ended during his presidency.

Speaking in New York at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday (23 September), Trump, the first convicted felon to resume the presidency, said that 'everyone says that I should get the Nobel Peace Prize'.

"The UN has such tremendous potential. I’ve always said it. All they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter up. It’s empty words, and empty words don’t solve war. The only thing that solves war and wars is action," he said, before repeating his signature claim to have 'ended seven wars'.

The Department of State took to X the same day, to share a photo of Trump with his right fist in the air, dubbing him the 'president of peace', a phrase frequently echoed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, adding that he ended seven wars in seven months.

But what are these alleged 'seven wars' the 79-year-old Republican claims to have brought to an end?

Before we get into all that, however, let's just quickly fact-check Trump's scathing statement against the UN - which has actually succeeded in resolving numerous conflicts since its founding in 1945 and has provided multiple peacekeeping missions since.

A particularly notable example that comes to mind is the 1988 settlement that ended the Iran-Iraq war after eight years of fighting that cost an estimated one million lives on both sides.

Additionally, the UN has also successfully ended several civil wars in Namibia, El Salvador, Mozambique and Cambodia.

Meanwhile, Trump’s pre-election promises to end the long-running wars between Russia and Ukraine and the Israeli genocide against Palestine remain unfulfilled.

Cambodia and Thailand

Thailand and Cambodia have centuries-old tensions over their 500-mile shared border, leading to sporadic clashes.

Earlier this summer (24 July), fighting broke out after Thai officials accused Cambodian troops of attacking a base. The violence lasted four days, leaving 35 dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.

Trump pressured both sides by threatening to end US trade negotiations unless a ceasefire was reached.

A peace deal was signed on 7 August, though Malaysia hosted the actual talks.

"Officials met in Malaysia for talks organised by Malaysian and American officials and reached a deal to pause hostilities," the New York Times reports

However, tensions in the region remain high and there have been exchanges of fire since with the NYT adding: "Though the fighting has stopped, critics of Mr. Trump’s approach say his intervention did not address the underlying causes of the conflict."

Kosovo and Serbia

In the Balkans, Trump claimed to have 'prevented' a war between Serbia and Kosovo.

While it is not clear what incident he is referring to, during his first term, Trump hosted the leaders of the two countries in Washington to sign a deal normalising economic relations.

In 2020, the two nations signed an agreement to pursue economic engagement in the Oval Office but no peace agreement has been signed between them.

Additionally, Trump has shown little interest in the dispute since returning to office.

Kosovan President Vjosa Osmani expressed on Tuesday what expected from Trump's speech at the UN. "The president [Trump] has always been a leader that speaks with clarity and strength and conviction, so, as he takes the stage at the United Nations today, we expect a strong message of peace through strength that has delivered in our part of Europe, because that's the only message that autocrats and crazy leaders around the world who want to kill and cause suffering understand."

DRC and Rwanda

Tensions between the two nations reignited earlier this year when M23 rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, seized a mineral-rich area in eastern DRC. Rwanda, however, denies supporting the group.

In June, foreign ministers from both countries signed a deal at the White House reaffirming a 2024 ceasefire agreement. Trump hailed it as peace in 'one of the worst wars anyone’s ever seen'.

M23 was not part of the talks and has rejected the deal.

"In the US president’s telling, the two sides put down their weapons after he promised investment from US mining companies in the resource-rich region of Kivu, in the east of the DRC, which was overrun by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels earlier this year," The Times reports.

While Trump called the accord 'a glorious triumph', it's important to note that talks on a comprehensive agreement have since faltered, and deadly fighting has continued.

Pakistan and India

The decades-long conflict over Kashmir flared up again in May, after an attack in Indian-controlled territory which killed 26 civilians.

However, neither side appeared ready for a protracted war, and a truce was announced on 10 May with Trump claiming credit for brokering the peace.

"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Pakistan even nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize, but India strongly denied any US role, saying the talks were direct bilateral negotiations.

Israel and Iran

A few months back (13 June), war broke out between Israel and Iran, leading to US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites.

"By bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities, the US president believes he has already brought peace to the Middle East. He recently had a model of a B-2 Spirit Bomber installed in the Oval Office to commemorate his 'flawless' success," The Times adds.

Trump declared a carefully staged ceasefire timeline, calling the 12-day war officially over once both sides halted attacks in sequence.

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claimed victory and dismissed the US strikes as ineffective.

"Several analysts have publicly doubted that the disagreement over Iran’s nuclear ambitions has been resolved and warn that the conflict could re-ignite," the Guardian reports.

Egypt and Ethiopia

For over a decade, Egypt and Ethiopia have been locked in dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile.

The dam, which has been operational since 2022, is vital for Ethiopia’s energy needs, with Egypt arguing it threatens its water supply.

Talks collapsed in late June, prompting Trump to announce on social media that the US would 'solve the dispute soon'.

He also claimed the US partially funded the dam, though the White House could not confirm this, and Ethiopian officials vehemently denied it.

No formal agreement has been reached with the NYT writing: "Mr. Trump’s diplomacy has done little to resolve the dispute."

Armenia and Azerbaijan

For nearly 40 years, Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought over Nagorno-Karabakh, a region historically home to ethnic Armenians.

The latest fighting erupted in September 2023, when Azerbaijan seized the territory and effectively annexed the region, expelling its majority Armenian population, prompting allegations of ethnic cleansing.

On 8 August, a peace deal was announced at the White House with the proposal sharing plans for a road, dubbed the 'Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity', connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan.

"Leaders of both countries praised Mr. Trump for stepping in, but Azerbaijan continues to demand that Armenia change its Constitution to remove mentions of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan also still occupies small areas of Armenia, citing security concerns, and the countries have not agreed on a shared border," the New York Times reports.
