A body language expert has analysed the ‘cold’ interaction between Melania Trump and Usha Vance.

The two women appeared together at the 113th annual First Lady’s Luncheon at the Washington Hilton on 23 April. The goal of the gathering is to discuss policies and programmes impacting children and youth in the US, but something else also caught people’s eye.

The first lady and second lady of the United States were seen together at the event, and videos soon circulated on social media.

Mrs Vance introduced Mrs Trump, mentioning her achievements as a model, businesswoman, best-selling author, and now a movie producer. Melania co-produced the documentary-style film about her life that she said was not actually a documentary.

As Vance finished the introduction with a smile, Melania approached the lectern and began her speech.

Now, body language expert Judi James has looked deeper into how the two women engaged with each other at the event.

“(Vance) thoughtfully reaches out to turn the page on the notes for her too, and we can hear a 'thank you' from Melania although there is no greeting ritual between the two women when you might have expected a hug or even a brief touch plus some warm eye contact of acknowledgment,” James told the Irish Star.

The expert goes on to note that Vance stood beside Melania and turned to smile, while the first lady faced outward towards the room. Melania shifted her gaze and smile to the attendees, and James suggested that the behaviour some might have viewed as cold might actually stem from a ‘businesslike’ demeanour.

James added: “Melania has been very much in businesslike mode recently, and perhaps this body language was pre-arranged to make her or both of them appear more like serious heavyweights with some powerful messages rather than adhering to the more traditional first lady body language traits of tactile affection and empathy.”

The annual event dates all the way back to 1921 and recognises the current first lady’s initiatives and supports national nonprofit organisations through fundraising.

As first lady, Melania prioritises children’s issues. She launched the Be Best campaign in 2018 to promote children’s welfare.

At the event on Wednesday, Mrs Trump told the nearly 2,000 attendees: “Progress is not granted, you must be the composer, embolden your influence in the community with a strong vision to the future.”

She also mentioned her recent meeting with members of the House Ways and Means Committee, which took place the week before. Its goal is to advance the landmark legislation that would improve the foster care system.

“I’m confident this will soon become the law of the land when passed,” she said. “This will mark the second piece of legislation I have championed for the protection of America’s next generation.”
